Title: Your transition theme song
Post by: DarthKitty on February 09, 2008, 08:04:54 PM
Hi all :)

Subject came up in the chatroom regarding what songs touched us close during our transitions, and I was just wondering what songs touch everyone regarding their transitions.  My personal theme song/anthem through this has been Bad Religion's "Live Again - The Fall of Man" and seeing other's songs each says more about where our minds are/was than words can ever say.

So speak up, let me know your personal transition theme songs/anthems. :)

Tender Trip on Earth, by Tristania:

Up on the gallery,
God shouting down at me,
Something I cannot be...

Chorus:

Tears falling from the sky,
Words from a lullaby,
Everything beautiful dies.

For now we're hanging in,
Though we're all blessed with sin,
You make my tired heart sing.

Weirdly, oddly comforting.

Couldn't find it on youtube, but here are some other amazing tracks by them:

Travelin' Thru - Dolly Parton
From the movie TransAmerica

Well I can't tell you where I'm going, I'm not sure of where I've been
But I know I must keep travelin' till my road comes to an end
I'm out here on my journey, trying to make the most of it
I'm a puzzle, I must figure out where all my pieces fit
Like a poor wayfaring stranger that they speak about in song
I'm just a weary pilgrim trying to find what feels like home
Where that is no one can tell me, am I doomed to ever roam
I'm just travelin', travelin', travelin', I'm just travelin' on

Questions I have many, answers but a few
But we're here to learn, the spirit burns, to know the greater truth
We've all been crucified and they nailed Jesus to the tree
And when I'm born again, you're gonna see a change in me

God made me for a reason and nothing is in vain
Redemption comes in many shapes with many kinds of pain
Oh sweet Jesus if you're listening, keep me ever close to you
As I'm stumblin', tumblin', wonderin', as I'm travelin' thru

I'm just travelin', travelin', travelin', I'm just travelin' thru
I'm just travelin', travelin', travelin', I'm just travelin' thru

Oh sometimes the road is rugged, and it's hard to travel on
But holdin' to each other, we don't have to walk alone
When everything is broken, we can mend it if we try
We can make a world of difference, if we want to we can fly

Goodbye little children, goodnight you handsome men
Farewell to all you ladies and to all who knew me when
And I hope I'll see you down the road, you meant more than I knew
As I was travelin', travelin', travelin', travelin', travelin' thru

I'm just travelin', travelin', travelin', I'm just travelin'
Drifting like a floating boat and roaming like the wind
Oh give me some direction lord, let me lean on you
As I'm travelin', travelin', travelin', thru

I'm just travelin', travelin', travelin', I'm just travelin' thru
I'm just travelin', travelin', travelin', I'm just travelin' thru

Like the poor wayfaring stranger that they speak about in song
I'm just a weary pilgrim trying to find my own way home
Oh sweet Jesus if you're out there, keep me ever close to you
As I'm travelin', travelin', travelin', as I'm travelin' thru

Dixie Chicks - Not Ready To Make Nice

Guess I still have some early pre-transition anger going on.  :)

Forgive, sounds good.
Forget, I'm not sure I could.
They say time heals everything,
But I'm still waiting

I'm through, with doubt,
There's nothing left for me to figure out,
I've paid a price, and i'll keep paying

I'm not ready to make nice,
I'm not ready to back down,
I'm still mad as hell
And I don't have time
To go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is
You think I should

I know you said
Why can't you just get over it,
It turned my whole world around
and i kind of like it

I made by bed, and I sleep like a baby,
With no regrets and I don't mind saying,
It's a sad sad story
That a mother will teach her daughter
that she ought to hate a perfect stranger.
And how in the world
Can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter
Saying that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

I'm not ready to make nice,
I'm not ready to back down,
I'm still mad as hell
And I don't have time
To go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is
You think I should

I'm not ready to make nice,
I'm not ready to back down,
I'm still mad as hell
And I don't have time
To go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is
You think I should

Forgive, sounds good.
Forget, I'm not sure I could.

At the very beginning of transition, "Reflection" from Mulan.  Probably the best body dismorphic theme song.  EVAR.

Look at me
I will never pass for a perfect bride
Or a perfect daughter
Can it be
I'm not meant to play this part?
Now I see
That if I were truly to be myself
I would break my fam'ly's heart

Who is that girl I see
Staring straight
Back at me?
Why is my reflection someone
I don't know?
Somehow I cannot hide
Who I am
Though I've tried
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?

Thanks all, these songs are so great.  I'd like to go ahead and add another song that touched me.  It came to mean something to me when I finally reconciled my male and female sides.  They had been going in two directions for a while, and finally I realized that both sides of me had good traits and bad that were a part of me as a whole, and that neither needed to be abandoned or neglected.  Being one or the other, I was two different strangers walking past each other.  Then again I wasn't much of a Journey fan until the past year and a half.  I was too much of a pessimist to enjoy their music (think angry German industrial music.) :)

Journey - Don't stop believing

Just a small town girl, livin in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin anywhere
Just a city boy, born and raised in south detroit
He took the midnight train goin anywhere

A singer in a smokey room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waiting, up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people, living just to find emotion
Hiding, somewhere in the night

Working hard to get my fill,
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin anything to roll the dice,
Just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

(chorus)

-Kit :)

This song means a great deal to me. It's helped me more than i can express to any of you. It spoke out against violence, helped to break race stigmas and told us not to judge people on how they dressed. I drown in its depth.

I was going to say that one too!

But I'll take Queen's  Don't Stop Me Now

Tonight Im gonna have myself a real good time
I feel alive and the world turning inside out yeah!
And floating around in ecstasy
So dont stop me now dont stop me
cause Im having a good time having a good time

Im a shooting star leaping through the sky
Like a tiger defying the laws of gravity
Im a racing car passing by like lady godiva
Im gonna go go go
Theres no stopping me

Im burning through the sky yeah!
Two hundred degrees
Thats why they call me mister fahrenheit
Im travling at the speed of light
I wanna make a supersonic man out of you

Dont stop me now Im having such a good time
Im having a ball dont stop me now
If you wanna have a good time just give me a call
Dont stop me now (cause Im havin a good time)
Dont stop me now (yes Im havin a good time)
I dont want to stop at all

Im a rocket ship on my way to mars
On a collision course
I am a satellite Im out of control
I am a sex machine ready to reload
Like an atom bomb about to
Oh oh oh oh oh explode

Im burning through the sky yeah!
Two hundred degrees
Thats why they call me mister fahrenheit
Im travling at the speed of light
I wanna make a supersonic woman of you

For me there is only one real choice, especially as I am pre-op. It's by the Welsh band The Manic Street Preachers, it's called "Born a `Girl" and the lyrics are:
QuoteDo I look good for you tonight
Will you accuse me as I hide
Behind these layers of disguise
In the mirrors of my own happiness

Ive loved the freedom of being inside
Need a new start and a different time
Something grows in the space between me
And its twisting and changing this fragile body

And I wish I had been born a girl instead of what I am
Yes I wish I had been born a girl and not this mess of a man
And not this mess of a man
And not this mess of a man

The censorship of my skin
Is screaming inside and from within
Theres no room in this world for a girl like me
And place around there where I fit in

And I wish I had been born a girl instead of what I am
Yes I wish I had been born a girl and not this mess of a man
And not this mess of a man
And not this mess of a man
And not this mess of a man
And not this mess of a man

"The Ballad" by Testament from the 1989 recording "Practice What You Preach"

QuoteI'm not one to say
Where my feelings are going when they wither away
I pray to see another day
My heart's feeling like a needle lost in the hay
Restrained to meet again
My friend do you think that we ever will
I know we are free...

The games are played with your life on the line
Some lose, you win if you keep on trying
I don't mind doing the time, I'm happier being alive
Now I know the means to my opression were all lies
The only truth is your own most sacred lesson I've ever learned
I know we are free...

Yeah,
Don't go,
No,
Don't look back,
Just realize

I've been robbed, I've been fooled
I intent now to make my own rules
Dagger's edge cut the life, I've been down that road too many times

What's to fear, fear no more,
Show my conscience what fear's for
Now I know this is so real
What's done is done so do as you will!

I'm keeping alive! Go on, no don't look back
Just realise where you've gone.
Where are you going to, no life's not done wit you
You're only just begun, to live your life, for you...
I have always liked this song but ever since I have started my transition, there are so many lines in this song that relate to what I have been going through. Today I put this song on because I had not listened to it in a long time and I have not stop playing it (current time is approximately two and half hours and the song is only six minutes long. :D) It is pretty comical when you think about it (playing it so much repeatedly) but its just so beautiful and really fits the mood today.  ;D

Four songs! (today)

Fiona Apple: A Better Version of Me

The nickel dropped
When I was on
My way beyond
The Rubicon
What did I do

And of the games that I can handle
None are ones worth the candle
What can I do

I'm a frightened, fickle person
Fighting, cryin', kickin', cursin'
What should I do

Oooh, after all the folderol,
And hauling over coals stops
What will I do

Can't take a good day without a bad one
Don't feel just to smile until I've had one
Where did I learn

I make a fuss about a little thing
The rhyme is losing to the riddling
Where's the turn

I don't want a home, I'd ruin that
Home is where my habits have a habitat
Why give it a turn

Oh, after all the folderol
And hauling over coals stops
What did I learn

I am likely to miss the main event
If I stop to cry or complain again
So I will keep a deliberate pace
Let the damned breeze dry my face

Oh, mister, wait until you see
What I'm gonna be

I've got a plan, a demand and it just began
And if you're right, you'll agree

Here's coming a better version of me
Here it comes a better version of me
Here it comes a better version of me

Goldfrapp- Slide In

You send me just colours
I´m waiting, don´t hold back
Trees bow to the wind
And I´m falling inside you

Slide in
Feel the future
Rushing Slowly
Right now

So close I could
touch it
I´m dreaming
Don´t wake up

Slide in
Feel the future
Rushing slowly
Light now

Nothing makes me
Feel like
Show me real love
Right now

Its the lyrics that impressed me.

Star Trek: Enterprise (theme song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUmO-ELaR_o

AS HEARD ON SHOW

It's been a long road - getting from there to here.
It's been a long time, but my time is finally near

And I will see my dream come alive at last. I will touch the sky.
And they're not gonna hold me down no more
No, they're not gonna change my mind
Cause I got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I got faith to believe I can do anything.
I got strength of the soul and no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star. I got faith. Faith of the heart.

COMPLETE LYRICS

"The magic of believing is this: if we really believe in ourselves, our heart will take us to the highest plateau of personal success. Nothing will stop us as long as we have faith in our hearts."

It's been a long road - Getting from there to here.
It's been a long time, but my time is finally near.

And I can feel the change in the wind right now
Nothing's in my way
And they're not gonna hold me down no more
No, they're not gonna hold me now

Chorus:
Cause I got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I got faith to believe. I can do anything.
I got strength of the soul
And no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star. I got faith. Faith of the heart

Faith Of the Heart written by Diane Warren, sung by British opera star Russell Watson

It's funny you mention this because I was just talking about this the other day with someone.  My transition song would have to be "A Voice Within" by Christina Aguilera. I'm a total lyric person, if the words are beautiful, I automatically like the song. I've always been that way. That's why I always liked a lot of emo and punk stuff, it spoke to me. Anyway, this song by Christina Aguilera really speaks to me and has for a while. It's basic theme is knowing how important it is to really listen to that voice within yourself and be strong even in the face of adversity. As transpeople, that's a message I think we can all relate to:

The Voice Within
Written by Christina Aguilera

Young girl don't cry
I'll be right here when your world starts to fall, ooh
Young girl it's alright
Your tears will dry, you'll soon be free to fly, ooh

When you're safe inside your room you tend to dream
Of a place where nothing's harder than it seems
No one ever wants or bothers to explain
Of the heartache life can bring and what it means

When there's no one else
Look inside yourself
Like your oldest friend just
Trust the voice within
Then you'll find the strength
That will guide your way
You'll learn to begin to
Trust the voice within, ohh

Young girl don't hide
You'll never change if you just run away, ooh ohh
Young girl just hold tight
Soon you're gonna see your brighter day, ohh

Now in a world where innocence is quickly claimed
It's so hard to stand your ground when you're so afraid
No one reaches out a hand for you to hold
When you're lost outside, look inside to your soul

When there's no one else
Look inside yourself
Like your oldest friend just
Trust the voice within
Then you'll find the strength
That will guide your way
If you'll learn to begin to
Trust the voice within

Ohh yeah, ooh, yeah ohh

Life is a journey
It can take you anywhere you choose to go
As long as you're learning
You'll find all you'll ever need to know
(Be strong)
Break it
(Hold on)
You'll make it
(Be strong)
Just don't forsake it because
(No one can tell you what you can't do)
No one can stop you
You know that I'm talking to you

When there's no one else
Look inside yourself
And like your oldest friend just
Trust the voice within
Then you'll find the strength
That will guide your way
You'll learn to begin to
Trust the voice within, oh yeah

Young girl don't cry
I'll be right here when your world starts to fall, ohh

I constantly sang this during my transition, in the car, the shower, everywhere, lol... just To Keep Going...

Faith Of The Heart, by Watson Russell

It's been a long road
Getting from there to here
It's been a long time
But my time is finally near

And I can feel the change in the wind right now
Nothing's in my way
And they're not gonna hold me down no more
No they're not gonna hold me down

'Cause I've got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I've got faith to believe
I can do anything
I've got strength of the soul
And no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star
I've got faith, I've got faith, faith of the heart

It's been a long night
Trying to find my way
Been through the darkness
Now I've finally have my day

And I will see my dream come alive at last
I will touch the sky
And they're not gonna hold me down no more
No they're not gonna change my mind

'Cause I've got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I've got faith to believe
I can do anything
I've got strength of the soul
And no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star
I've got faith, faith of the heart

I've known the wind so cold, and seen the darkest days.
But now the winds I feel, are only winds of change.
I've been through the fire and I've been through the rain.
But I'll be fine.

Cause I've got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I've got faith to believe
I can do anything
I've got strength of the soul
And no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star
I've got faith

I've got faith of the heart.
I'm going where my heart will take me.
I've got strength of the soul. And no one's gonna bend or break me.
I can reach any star. I've got faith, I've got faith, faith of the heart.

It's been a long road.

Not just one song--
it's so hard to pick a favorite from among them.
Here's a few:
Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day
Good Enough by Evanescence
A Long December by Counting Crows
Chocolate by Snow Patrol (but I prefer Charlotte Martin's cover)
Stockton Gala Days by 10000 Maniacs
J'attends l'amour by Jenifer

These songs just say something to me in one way or another.  They aren't necessarily inspirational, but there's just something about them.  Plus, I'm also just starting out, so the melancholy maybe is to be expected.  Of course, I am something of a "glass half-empty" kind of girl.  Can't help that.

And as a member of the Cult of Tori, pretty much any song by Tori Amos is good (of course there are exceptions, but let's not go there).  Songs like Pretty Good Year and Black Swan really do something for me.  Just like the other songs I've listed.  There's nothing particularly inspirational about the lyrics, it's more the tune, the feel of the song, a certain je ne sais quoi.

I've discovered two new ones, both by VNV Nation, to add to my list. I've been plugging them shamelessly to everybody who'll listen. (There just is not enough EBM and Futurepop in the world, frankly)

Illusion

I know it's hard to tell how mixed up you feel
Hoping what you need is behind every door
Each time you get hurt, I don't want you to change
Because everyone has hopes, you're human after all
The feeling sometimes, wishing you were someone else
Feeling as though you never belong
This feeling is not sadness, this feeling is not joy
I truly understand, Please, don't cry now

Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate for all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion trying to change you
Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate for all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion trying to change you

Being like you are
Well this is something else, who would comprehend?
But some that do, lay claim that
Divine purpose blesses them
That's not what I believe, it doesn't matter anyway
A part of your soul ties you to the next world
Or maybe to the last, I'm still not sure
What I do know is, to use the world is different
As we are to the world but, I guess you would know that

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pu-8wGbWMro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pu-8wGbWMro)

Carry You.

Conceal your deepest worries
Confine your thoughts inside
The walls you built of damaged pride
The light in your eyes failing
Like you're adrift
Like night pretending to be day
These storms subside

Though the past, the unwanted memories, are holding onto you
All the power in the universe conspires to carry you
Truths you find through your adversities will defend you
As your powers and all your energies conspire to carry you

The adversary to your soul
The blackest thoughts
That try to poison you
These storms subside
Lay down your greatest burden
Relinquish that which has control of you
And let yourself through

Though it seems the past and the future look the same
Suffice to say you're still here

She said "I could tell you a story that could make you cry"
"What about you?"
I said "Me too"
"I could tell you a story that will make you cry"
And she sighed "Ah"
I said "I wanna be a singer like Lou Reed"
"I like Lou Reed" she said sticking her tongue in my ear
"Let's go, let's sit, let's talk"
"Politics go so good with beer"
"And while we're at it baby, why don't you tell me one of your biggest fears?"

Oh man, I love Lou Reed, Frank Black loves Lou Reed, we all love Lou Reed!

My favorite LR song is probably Candy Says or How Do You Think It Feels?

I'm not transitioning...yet. It's more like I'm awakening.

Nevertheless, music has played an important role in the emotional expression of my life since I "discovered" it back in seventh grade.

My song would be "Skin" by Oingo Boingo.

"Skin" by Oingo Boingo

This is someone else's story
Someone that I never knew
This is someone else's body
Am I getting through to you
If you peel away the armor is something underneath
If you look below for hidden treasure underneath another layer
Are you hiding underneath the skin

If you peel away the skin is there anybody there
If you peel away the skin is there anybody there
If you peel away the armor is it too late to begin
Is there anybody hiding if you peel away the skin

Now a spark has passed between us now
A momentary recognition
Something lost and something gained
And something shared that feels strange
Something cold that will not go away

There's a heart as cold as ice
In a vault that's made of stone
Over years the walls got higher
Over years the walls have grown

Is there anybody in there in this self inflicted tomb
If you peel away the layers is there someone in this room
If you peel away the skin, if you peel away the skin

This is someone else's story
Someone that I never knew
This is someone else's body
Am I getting through to you

If you peel away the armor is something underneath
If you look below for hidden treasure underneath another layer
Are you hiding underneath the skin

If you peel away the skin is there anybody there
If you peel away the skin is there anybody there
If you peel away the armor is it too late to begin
Is there anybody hiding if you peel away the skin

If you peel away the skin...

Found this, and it has become my absolute favorite song! ;D Now if only I could play my guitar that good.

Aimee B - Future in my hands
[yt=425,350]v/Rk06EieuGuM[/yt]

Standing where I should be
Believing as I'm told to believe
Being who I should be
Doing what I should do

Did you hear what I said?
Did you get what I meant?
What you saw is an illusion
You're living in delusion

Going on and on I have the future in my hands
Getting lose from days I never could get over
Going on and on until I'm finally myself
Getting out of this dishonest world I never wanted
Now is the time
Now is the time

Ask me if you're anxions
I'll give you all the answers
Truth or dare - it's your choice
Your truth is what you wish for

Who am I to tell you that the future's in your hands?
Set me free from lies and cold deceptions, I'm so scared
Going on and on across this land, across the time
Going on to see, to feel, to breathe
I've always wanted

Sleepless nights I'm spending
Counting all the words that broke my heart
I'm leaving all my past here
Then I'll see the world for sure

Going on and on I have the future in my hands
Getting lose from days I never could get over
Going on and on until I'm finally myself
Getting out of this dishonest world I never wanted

Now is the time
Now is the time

Chase after time
Chase after time.

Rocket, by the Smashing Pumpkins... I've always loved the lyrics and the video with the kids building a rocket in front of the unsuspecting adults. It reminds me of how people will dismiss our claims of being different at first and only when they see us taking to the stars do they pay attention.

"The Unforgiven" lyrics
Metallica Lyrics

"The Unforgiven"

New blood joins this earth,
And quickly he's subdued.
Through constant pained disgrace
The young boy learns their rules.

With time the child draws in.
This whipping boy done wrong.
Deprived of all his thoughts
The young man struggles on and on he's known
A vow unto his own,
That never from this day
His will they'll take away.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never be.
Never see.
Won't see what might have been.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

They dedicate their lives
To running all of his.
He tries to please them all –
This bitter man he is.

Throughout his life the same –
He's battled constantly.
This fight he cannot win –
A tired man they see no longer cares.

The old man then prepares
To die regretfully –
That old man here is me.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never be.
Never see.
Won't see what might have been.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

[Solo]

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never be.
Never see.
Won't see what might have been.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

You labelled me,
I'll label you.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

You labelled me,
I'll label you.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

Jackson Browne - Alive in the World

Just a few lyrics from the song. The link is provided below. I listen to it every day and cry every time I listen to it.

..."I want to live in the world, not inside my head..."

..."I want to live in the world, I want to stand and be counted..."

..."I want to live in the world, not behind some wall..."

..."Who among his harbors the fantasy of breaking out, and taking [her] chances alive in the world.."

..."To open my eyes and wake up alive in the world, to open my eyes and finally arrive in the world..."

Always loved the movie 'Orlando'  ;D youtube and lyrics are thread here (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,110315.msg833580.html#msg833580).

Times have changed, we don't have to live a life of loneliness & isolation anymore, WE CAN NOW HAVE IT ALL! Orlando used time to distance herself from her past but of course we do not have that luxury and must use understanding thru enlightenment instead, with hopefully acceptance following thereafter. Surely certain differences eventually cost her dearly, but only by choice and that which she wasn't really seeking in the first place.
Quote       She, for there can be no doubt about her sex, is visiting the house she finally lost for the first time in over a 100 years.
She does still have some natural advantages of course. She is tall and slim with a slightly androgynous appearance that many females at the time aspired.
Then her upbringing. She has lived for 400 years and hardly aged a day and because this is England, everyone pretends not to notice.
But she is changed she is no longer trapped by destiny. And ever since she let go of the past she found her life is beginning

"             Thus Queen Elizabeth bestows Orlando's long life upon him ("Do not fade, do not wither, do not grow old . . .") whereas in the book it remains unexplained. And Orlando's change of sex in the film is the result of his having reached a crisis point—a crisis of masculine identity. On the battlefield he looks death and destruction in the face and faces the challenge of kill or be killed. It is Orlando's unwillingness to conform to what is expected of him as a man that leads—within the logic of the film—to his change of sex. Later, of course, as a woman, Orlando finds that she cannot conform to what is expected of her as a female either, and makes a series of choices which leave her, unlike in the book, without marriage or property—and with a daughter, not a son.   "

I totally missed this thread.  It's great, a lot of good transition songs.  I can't believe mine wasn't mentioned yet.  This song spoke to me when it first came out in a way I can't explain.  It was like a secret I couldn't tell anyone.  I've listened to this like a billion times.  Every time I hear it I think of my transition, how I will survive and win.

Muse "Survival"

Race, life's a race
And I am gonna win
Yes, I am gonna win

And I'll light the fuse
And I'll never lose
And I choose to survive
Whatever it takes

You won't pull ahead
I'll keep up the pace
And I'll reveal my strength
To the whole human race

Yes I am prepared
To stay alive
And I won't forgive,
Vengeance is mine
And I won't give in
Because I choose to thrive

Yeah, I'm gonna win!

[guitar solo]

Race, it's a race
And I'm gonna win
Yes, I'm gonna win

And I will light the fuse
I'll never lose
And I choose to survive
Whatever it takes

You won't pull ahead
'Cause I'll keep up the pace
And I'll reveal my strength
To the whole human race

Yes I'm gonna win

[guitar solo]

Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!
Win! Win! Win! Win!

Yes I'm gonna win!

I'll go with Dar Williams' "When I Was A Boy"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gIZt0hE1E0

I won't forget when Peter Pan came to my house, took my hand
I said I was a boy; I'm glad he didn't check.
I learned to fly, I learned to fight
I lived a whole life in one night
We saved each other's lives out on the pirate's deck.
And I remember that night
When I'm leaving a late night with some friends
And I hear somebody tell me it's not safe, someone should help me
I need to find a nice man to walk me home.
When I was a boy, I scared the pants off of my mom,
Climbed what I could climb upon
And I don't know how I survived,
I guess I knew the tricks that all boys knew.
And you can walk me home, but I was a boy, too.

I was a kid that you would like, just a small boy on her bike
Riding topless, yeah, I never cared who saw.
My neighbor come outside to say, "Get your shirt, "
I said "No way, it's the last time I'm not breaking any law."
And now I'm in a clothing store, and the sign says less is more
More that's tight means more to see, more for them, not more for me
That can't help me climb a tree in ten seconds flat

When I was a boy, see that picture? That was me
Grass-stained shirt and dusty knees
And I know things have gotta change,
They got pills to sell, they've got implants to put in, they've got implants to remove
But I am not forgetting
That I was a boy too

And like the woods where I would creep, it's a secret I can keep
Except when I'm tired, except when I'm being caught off guard
I've had a lonesome awful day, the conversation finds its way
To catching fire-flies out in the backyard.
And I tell the man I'm with about the other life I lived
And I say now you're top gun, I have lost and you have won
And he says, "Oh no, no, can't you see
When I was a girl, my mom and I we always talked
And I picked flowers everywhere that I walked.
And I could always cry, now even when I'm alone I seldom do
And I have lost some kindness
But I was a girl too.
And you were just like me, and I was just like you.

I am amazed - mind-blown amazed - that this song has not yet been posted yet.
It's about as close as you can come to explicitly describing transition, without doing so.
Pretty revolutionary for 1983.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vL5L5Y61Jyk

I remember Johnny, hey
Johnny come lately
I remember her shoes like a ballerina
A girl called Johnny who
Changed her name when she
Discovered her choice was to
Change or to be changed
I remember a girl called Johnny
Black as hell and white as a ghost
"Don't talk about life or death"
She said I've had enough of both
A girl called Johnny who was not scared
They'd have torn her to pieces but
Who would dare?
I remember a girl called Johnny
The train came to town, boy she got on it
With no looking back, with not a word
If she said goodbye, well I never heard
But the noise goes on
The noise, the jazz
And the truth is in somebody else's hands
And the house that a girl called johnny built
Is now just ashes and sand

------

As for myself, I listened to this next song often enough when I transitioned.
One particular verse stands out:

"You get one look,
I'll show you something that the knife took,
A bit too early for my own good,
Now let's not speak of it again."

After an initial orchi, my family was freaked out.
I did it to change the gender marker legally,
but it was still a difficult thing even for me,

I love this topic, since I'm so musically oriented.  I have started making a list of songs that have always reminded me of GD, or transition.  Here's another of mine.  Trigger warning, this is a tear jerker for us transgender fill.

Anouk - Time Is A Jailer

No one can hear me, 'cause no one is around
But I still hear your whisper in the dark
I know I can go, I know I can leave when ever I please
But time is a jailer for me
A face in the window, looking inside
But no one else sees it, I know
And now that you've found that the years have changed
What the ending will be
Time's just a jailer for me
I shut out the light
Alone in the dark
This time of night
Is the hardest part
I still hear the sound of your heels on the floor
I wait for the sound of your key in the door
But it's only the sound of nothing at all and so it must be
That time is a jailer for me
Time's just a jailer for me

And yes this song applies to me as well :) It could be you as well!

Quote
Look at what's happened to me
I can't believe it myself
Suddenly I'm up on top of the world
It should have been somebody else

Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me

Just like the light of a new day
It hit me from out of the blue
Breaking me out of the spell I was in
Making all of my wishes come true

Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me

This is too good to be true
Look at me falling for you
Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me

Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me

Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me

Born a girl, manic street preachers.

Do I look good for you tonight
Will you accuse me as I hide
Behind these layers of disguise
In the mirrors of my own happiness
I've loved the freedom of being inside
Need a new start and a different time
Something grows in the space between me
And it's twisting and changing this fragile body
And I wish I had been born a girl instead of what I am
Yes I wish I had been born a girl and not this mess of a man
And not this mess of a man
And not this mess of a man
The censorship of my skin
Is screaming inside and from within
There's no room in this world for a girl like me
And place...

The chorus of Daughter by Pearl Jam always gets me
I feel like I posted it somewhere already but I don't know if I did... Well, sorry if I did, but it would have been a while ago and I'm overtired and I wanna ramble about music so here you goooo

Don't call me daughter
Not fit to
The picture kept will remind me

The song as a whole (I think) is about a girl with learning difficulties (dyslexia?) disowning her family cause they didn't help or understand her, but that chorus. I got really dysphoric one night and blasted the song when I was in the shower, it made me feel a lot better. I listen to bootlegs a lot and Daughter's a fun one usually cause it gets covers/other songs tagged on the end, one night in 1998 they did Roam by The B-52s (that night also had an amazing sarcastic rant about saving the flag at the expense of the planet during a Neil Young cover) and that was half the reason I listened to Rock Lobster when it popped up in a spotify playlist... The other reason being that I love planes :)

And I'll mention Red Light Green Light by the Wellwater Conspiracy here cause I really like it and I'm trying to learn to play it on guitar by ear cause the band has zero tabs on the internet
struggles of enjoying obscure music I guess
It's not trans related but man do I love this band

I'm sitting here reading this whole thread and listening to some classical music and some of these lyrics just touch me so much I can hardly type because of the tears in my eyes.  Would likely not have happened several years ago.  But for me one simple song that brings a smile to my face and lifts my spirit is old, as am I.  It's Johnny Nash, "I can see clearly now".  Love the concertina.  Toni

I know this song isnt "about" this, but to me it is. it's about it and my wife and I. and... I cry every single time.

"Adventure Of A Lifetime"

Turn your magic on
Umi she'd say
Everything you want's a dream away
And we are legends every day
That's what she told me

Turn your magic on,
To me she'd say
Everything you want's a dream away
Under this pressure, under this weight
We are diamonds

Now I feel my heart beating
I feel my heart underneath my skin
And I feel my heart beating
Oh, you make me feel
Like I'm alive again
Alive again
Oh, you make me feel
Like I'm alive again

Said I can't go on,
Not in this way
I'm a dream that died by light of day
Gonna hold up half the sky and say
Only I own me

And I feel my heart beating
I feel my heart underneath my skin
Oh, I can feel my heart beating
'Cause you make me feel
Like I'm alive again
Alive again
Oh, you make me feel
Like I'm alive again

Turn your magic on,
Umi she'd say
Everything you want's a dream away
Under this pressure under this weight
We are diamonds taking shape
We are diamonds taking shape

If we've only got this life
This adventure, oh, then I
And if we've only got this life
You get me through

And if we've only got this life
In this adventure, oh, then I
Want to share it with you
With you
With you
Yeah I do
Woohoo
Woohoo
Woohoo

Transgender Dysphoria Blues album was the sound track to my transition. I can't choose just one song. Honestly I was skeptical that a concept album about transitioning and GD would turn out well. The band is called Against Me! The album is called Transgender Dysphoria Blues. The band had already released five studio albums, then the lead singer came out as transgender in Rolling Stone magazine. This was the band's first album post coming out. My favorite songs are Transgender Dysphoria Blues and ->-bleeped-<-mylife666.

I guess mine would be "Yeah Boy" by Kelesea Ballerini...especially the last 2 lines in the chorus...just sayin.

Yeah, boy
I'm digging what you're doing
Yeah, boy
I'm trying to keep it cool
But you're making it hard, I'm wishing your arms
Were wrapping me up tight
Yeah, boy
You shine and you can't even help it
Yeah, boy
Your eyes could make the moon jealous
And if you wanna know if I wanna be your girl tonight
Yeah, boy

I have two:

Guns'n'Roses [Spaghetti Incident] version of Human Being:

Well if you don't like it, go ahead,
Find yourself a man, go ahead now
Try to find a boy who's gonna be what I ain't..... >:-)
------
And if I'm acting like a king, don't you know it's 'cause
I'm a human being, and if I
Want too many things, don't you know it's 'cause
I'm a human being
And if I've got to dream, don't you know it's 'cause
I'm a human being
------
etc!

And another: Again, same album [Spaghetti Incident]:
Attitude
(I sing this really loud whenever I feel angry and frustrated etc. - always helps  ;D!)

See the dwarves
and see the giants
Well which one will you choose to be?
and if you can't get that together
here's the answer; here's the key:

You can freeze
like a 30th century man
and be a 30th century man
Play it cool
and saran wrap
while you can
and be a 30th century man

Save my breath,
I'll take it with me
oh, for a hundred years or so
I hope you won't be
there to see me
shakin' hands with Charles De Gaulle
(that mother->-bleeped-<-er)

You can freeze
like a 30th century man
and be a 30th century man
play it cool
and saran wrap while you can
and be a 30th century man

at first glance it doesn't seem relevant, but it's a song about action vs inaction.  You can choose not to act, and time and history will likely vindicate your cowardice....but in the here and now, you must choose to be a dwarf or be a giant.  Will you choose the fight that may likely kill you, or will you preserve yourself and protect yourself by hanging back and not take a stand for anything

oooo yay another Against Me fan on here! I've seen them a bunch over the years, I actually saw them play in a basement in 2002 in Binghamton and I bought the Crime 7" that night, I've loved them ever since!! I saw them again in 04 in Philly and then I didn't see them again until after Laura transitioned, I saw them in 2014 in Albany and then a year ago in Syracuse. The last 2 shows were awesome, Laura seemed to be having so much more fun now! I love the trans blues album but I also really like the True Trans 7" with the acoustic versions of FML666 and True Trans Soul Rebel, they just sound so lonely and there were nights where I would drink and listen to that record and cry

When I came out to some friends back in February I started taking notice of the Green Day song "Still Breathing". I didn't care for the song much when it came out, in general I'm more of a fan of their 90's stuff, but this one really started to hit home, I really liked the "are you scared to death to live?" line...

I was on my way to a homeless shelter to drop off most of my male clothing when this song came on. I had a hard time not crying...Carly Simon's "Haven't Got Time for the Pain"

All those crazy nights when I cried myself to sleep
Now melodrama never makes me weep anymore
'cause I haven't got time for the pain
I haven't got room for the pain
I haven't the need for the pain
Not since I've known you

You showed me how, how to leave myself behind
How to turn down the noise in my mind
Now I haven't got time for the pain
I haven't got room for the pain
I haven't the need for the pain
Not since I've known you

I haven't got time for the pain
I haven't got room for the pain
I haven't the need for the pain

Suffering was the only thing
that made me feel I was alive
Though that's just how much it cost
to survive in this world
'til you showed me how,
how to fill my heart with love
How to open up and drink
in all that white light
Pouring down from the heaven
I haven't got time for the pain
I haven't got room for the pain
I haven't the need for the pain
Not since I've known you

I haven't got time for the pain
I haven't got room or the need for the pain
No, I haven't got time
I haven't got time
No, I haven't got time for the pain
I said no no no more pain
No no no no no more pain
I haven't got time for the pain

I was lying on the electrologist's table, concentrating on the music in my headphones to take my mind off the pain.  And this song came up on the CD.  Ostensibly about canoeing, it's really about transition.  I suspect the songwriter's transition isn't gender related, but close enough.  I'll take it.

The line "Casting off dull certainty" really spoke to me; it's what I am doing.  Leaving behind the dull gray certainty of my male existence and becoming open to whatever interesting stuff the rest of my life might bring.

Whitewater by Eileen McGann

Whitewater's calling, the river's sweet refrain
Sings a chorus to the forest as it's shaking off the rain
The night was passed in thunder but the dawn is breaking clear
Whitewater's calling, and I'm moving on from here

And I'm moving on my way, letting go the rope
Casting off dull certainty and reaching for that brightly shining hope

Camped here forever, at least that how it seems
Waiting for a clearer sign, I'm wrestling with my dreams
I thought that they would bind me but now I think I see
Whitewater's calling, may it teach me to be free

And I'm moving on my way, letting go the rope
Casting off dull certainty and reaching for that brightly shining hope

I know the current's swift here the water's running deep
I know there's many rocks ahead I've seen them in my sleep
I know that I could founder just around the bend
But I love the water's laughter so I'll see it to the end

And I'm moving on my way, letting go the rope
Casting off dull certainty and reaching for that brightly shining hope

Storm Large
Call Me Crazy

Call me crazy
Because I am
And alive
I'm alive
That's the way I
Turn a nose dive into flight

Call me psycho
Cause I am
And also alive
Thank God I'm alive
I make music
Out of the voices
In my mind

And its crazy
Helps me to see
This as funny
Helps me feel rich
With no money Honeypie
Then my brain calls
Over and over and on now
Can't get away from the shadow land of mine

Call me later
Just to see
See that I got home alive
And I am alright
I'm just kidding
You know me
I'll be fine
Its just that crazy helped
Makes me feel great without money honeypie
Then my brians
Call me crazy because I am. Thank god I'm alive

New song added to my transition soundtrack. Tool - Forty-six & 2:

Join in my
Join in my child
and listen ...
Digging through
My old numb shadow

My shadow's
Shedding skin
and I've been picking
scabs again.
I'm down
digging through
my old muscles
for a clue.
I've been crawling on my belly
clearing out what could've been.
I've been wallowing in my own confused
and insecure delusions
for a piece to cross me over
or a word to guide me in.
I wanna feel the changes coming down.
I wanna know what I've been hiding
in (my shadow. 2x)
Change is coming through my shadow.
My shadow's
shedding skin.
I've been picking
my scabs again.

Join in my
Join in my child,
my shadow moves,
closer to me

I've been crawling on my belly
clearing out what could've been
I've been wallowing in my own chaotic,
insecure delusions.
I wanna feel the change consume me,
feel the outside turning in.
I wanna feel the metamorphosis and
cleansing I've endured in,
(my shadow. 2x)
Change is coming.
Now is my time.
Listen to my muscle memory.
Contemplate what I've been clinging to.
Forty-six and two ahead of me.

I,
choose to live and to,
grow,
take and give and to,
move,
learn and love and to,
cry,
kill and die and to,
be,
paranoid and to,
lie,
hate and fear and to,
do,
what it takes to move through.

I choose to live and to,
lie,
kill and give and to,
die,
learn and love and to,
do,
what it takes to step through.

See my shadow changing,
stretching up and over me
soften this old armor.
Hoping I can clear the way by
stepping through my shadow,
coming out the other side.
Step into the shadow.
Forty six and two
are just ahead of me.

Good lyrics on that choice Daisy Jane.

Here is another by Storm Large.  This one expresses my fear of coming out and fighting the trans beast.  It
is probably the same for a lot of us.

There's a verse in this one of "They'll throw you away if you go all the way."  it still gets me choked up.
