Title: X Men - the final movie
Post by: Steph on February 18, 2008, 11:27:22 AM
I recently got to see the final movie in the X-Men series, generally it is about the discovery of a cure for the mutants etc.  I immediately recognized how similar those of our community might react if they were faced with the same dilemma.  The arguments, protests and statements made by the mutants on learning of this cure would be very similar to our own.

Just an observation.

But the cure --- to make you body what your minds sees or to make our mind what our body portrays....  Which one is right?

How do you determine which way to CURE??

I meant the observation to be about how we would react if they found a cure for TS'm where you would no longer be TS but just "Normal" like everyone else just as in the movie where they discovered a cure for mutantism (Is that a word) where they became just like everyone else "No powers" :)

Steph?? I thought we were 'Normal'? WHAT! I'm a mutant! Nobody told me that! I knew I was an XY-woman and maybe I have another X or Y in there, but I didn't know I was a mutant. Oh my gosh! Now, I have to tell Pat something else. It looks like another all nighter. By the way are you off today? You live in Canada, so you don't have Presidents day. I do, so nanner nanner. ;0)~

Yes weeeeeee're aaaaaaaaaaaaaaall muuuuuuuuuuuuuuutants :D...  Yep I'm off today, we have a new holiday here in Ontario, it's called Family Day.  It started this Feb and is meant to break up the winter a little, and believe me our winter needs to be broken up a little.  Personally I don't know what all the fuss is about with global warming, I could do with a little warming right now :)

I have powers.
I can see through windows.
Lift mighty boxes of stuff.
Leap tall hedges in a single bound..

Oh wait..
Maybe those aren't so special..

Good analogy though Steph.
It probably would be the same.
People would want it and people would be against it.
All at the same time.

The one part I found particularly terrifying is when it went from being optional to mandatory.

Round up all the Mutants and give them all shots whether they want it or not and MAKE them all normal.

Substitute trans for mutants and YOU'LL be wide awake at 3:00 too!

If there were such a treatment, I would run not walk to the nearest border!

Storm as Thor. I see your point, Steph.

Now the question is do I want to command the storm or be a simple woman like any other?

I think I choose, the latter. But, like Kassie, I think I'll do that with my own 'pills' and 'injections' rather than those prescribed by some government enforcement.

I'm truly glad to see the idea's of Stan Lee's (creator of the X-Men series) vision of freedom of one's self is important has found it's way to a larger group of people. Although I don't like to hear all the hype about how the recent movies were partly filmed to portray LBGT rights, the director of the film Bryan Singer has made it known that he is gay, also Sir Ian McKellen ( plays Magneto) is an advocate for LBGT rights.

Non-the-less, I have been a great fan of Stan's "X-Men" (not the movie adaptation, even though the movies were good) ever since I came to read the comics in elementary school. And have found a great amount of learning about life through the stories in the comics, and how to apply every day issues I face with an open mind.

Even though they are comics, I tell people to read as much of it as possible when ever the get a chance if they thought the movies were good but haven't experienced the full aspect of the story. There's 40+ years of comic series and the movies just aren't long enough to tell it all.

I'm also a huge fan of X-Men. The themes of diversity and intollerance and how individuals deal with being different (contrast the mutually antagonistic philosophies of The Brotherhood against the X-Men, and you've pretty much got the HBS crowd against the "Spectrum of Diversity" crowd, for example) are brilliantly portrayed, and it's great to know that those kind of seeds germinate in younger generations and perhaps make them think twice when confronted by "different from us".

Apart from that though, they're just excellent stories, and I keep coming back for those. "The Age of Apokalips" remains one of the greatest storylines ever.
