In the Houston neighborhood of Montrose, a gay and lesbian-friendly place that locals call "the gayborhood," I met Rebekah Lee. She walked up to me, put her hand on my shoulder, and asked if I was there to cover the canvassing event. What I didn't know is that she was also slapping a "GLBT-for-Obama" sticker on my back -- which came as a surprise to me later.

A woman who was once a republican homophobe politician is now an Obama supporter.  Score 1 for the good guys!!!

That's what I think too.   but like the first comment I read after the story called her a hypocrite or something like that and said she's only doing things now to get attention.  I was like, "Jesus! Can't people understand such a simple concept as to how a person might behave messed up when they're suppressing and denying their true self?"  And the commentator could at least have given credit to the woman for being herself and for making the effort to repair some of the damage she had done.

Guess that one comment made me long winded.

Politicians will do anything to stay in office.  I need more proof of a real change of heart.  That they are 'right' now, does not make them any less an idiot before.

True.  However, I think that, for us, the important aspect of the story is the woman who overcame her ingrained self hatred and who is obviously comfortable with herself.

You are entitled to believe what you wish.

Like I said, she's a friend. By that I meant my own friend, not a TG friend.

She's changed from a scared and covered-up pseudo-guy to a wonderful and very open and caring 'true self.'

And yes, she is obviously comfortable with herself.

Darn.  My earlier response didn't come out right.  I misunderstood Tekla's post.  I guess some politician's only care about office, but I did not get the sense that the woman in the story is driven by the need to be in office so much as the need to do good.
