Title: How can I look more male?
Post by: _Kris_ on March 23, 2008, 01:54:44 AM
I already act and feel male--always have. Now, how can I look it?

If you've already read my intro, then you know that I have a few obstacles to overcome....

One: My feminine face. I've got very high, big cheekbones, a heart-shaped face, naturally long eyelashes, and big eyes.
Two: My large breasts. I've got D-cup sized breasts, and there is nothing that I can see to do about them right at this moment.
Three: I've got large hips and a protruding butt.

Overall, I'm super curvy with a "pretty" face, and I HATE THE WAY I LOOK!!!

Please, if you have any suggestions, help me out! I know nothing about hormonal treatments, so if anyone could provide information about that, I would be grateful.

Just to give you an idea of what I look like:

Tell you what, I've got a fixer upper, 22, male, about 5'3, scrawny punk, plenty of room to do weight training as you see fit. Trade you for one blessed and laden female body.  >:D

I suppose you could stop shaping your eyebrows, most guys don't and get bushy caterpillars as a result. Just don't go with unibrow.

Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about breasts besides binding (using things like medical tape and tight sports bras to try to compress the tissue), and at your size, you can't do much.

You probably want to go into the female to male transgender forum and ask for advice there, rather than here. Generally most crossdressers are male to female. But you may be able to find makeup tips to masculinize your face. Walking like a man helps, certainly, but like you said baggy clothes can only help so much with large breasts/hips.

Sorry man =/

Thank you for your reply, and thank you for pointing me to the right direction. I didn't have enough time last night to explore all the different boards, so I wasn't even aware at the time that there WAS a FTM transgender forums. Thank you! :)

My pleasure sir, best of luck. Don't feel like you don't have a stake here too, but hell I can't say that I really notice what guys your age/my age are really wearing

Hey Kris -

Welcome!

Yes, definitely grow in your eyebrows.  Also, your "sideburns" have a very feminine shape (like Liza Minelli's. :D )  Guys tend to have them cut straight across, not pointed.

Check out this link, which has great "passing tips" (as well as other great FTM info):

Hey, thanks! I've seen other people talk about that place, so I'll definitely check it out more in depth than what I already have.

Also, I'm actually going to cut my sideburns straight myself, simply because I've noticed, too, that they have a distinctly feminine look. My hairdresser did that on purpose, I'm sure. I just said, "Give me a boyish cut," and that's what I got. ::)

Hi Kris,

I know you don't want to hear this but you have absolutely beautiful bone structure that any of us
girls would love to have. But I think if you cut your sideburns and were able to grow a beard after being
on HRT for a while you will make one cute guy. The one thing that really sticks out to me though
is your neck. I think some weight lifting that would build up your neck would really help. I have just
the opposite problem. :)

And.... lol.... scowl more, look tough... no more smiling  :)

NOOOO!!!!

LoL!

I know that you'll understand why I won't say thank you. ;) :D

I have a natural tendency to be muscular for a biological female, and was told this all my life by friends and family (I can only fantasize about the muscle definition that I will have when I eventually choose to take T). Not too long ago, I had on a sleeveless gym shirt while at the Rec Center, and I was asked by a man that I was playing basketball with if I were a wrestler because of the muscular humps at the base of my neck. I was very happy to say, "Nope, it's all natural."

And I'll try not to smile so much--which is basically a huge lie since I'm a happy-go-lucky kind of guy. :P

Yea I understand, I hope you understand it was just envy that made me say it :)

I know when I was in deep denial when I was much younger I went through a period of trying to
gain muscle mass, I was very strong but had no male bulk and it was very hard to add that.  I
went from a whopping 135lbs to about 145lbs by eating lots of protein and lifting tons of weights and
no cardio. I think taking T will help a bit with muscle mass too but there are probably some guys here
that can tell you all about that :)

Kris: you could look male quite easily...
One thing, bulk up, but not fat, muscle, work out a lot, especially upper body, youll ballence the hips in no time, and hrt will kill your arse... trust me.
and your face while yeah, quite pretty, will look quite male in no time with a nice layer of stubble over it! :P nobody pays that much attention to guys faces, just 'manly, cute, pretty etc... lots fit il those 3... tbh, you can look like the fella you are, but it will take work.
Btw, the haircut suits you :)

I have some new pictures! AlwaysAmanda, you will be happy to see that I am not smiling in either of them. ;)

With these pictures, taken at my most masculine angles, I can see some potential, and I really can't wait to see what the T will do when I eventually start it. I haven't really been working out, so my muscle is pretty flabby, but as soon as it finishes warming up outside, I'm going to go buff-crazy.

yeah, the sideburns will help.  bind, wear guys clothes. if you're too big then layer and wear baggy hoodies. some guys like to pack.

I'm thinking that I want to get my side pieces either cut straight across or buzzed off... If I buzz them off, then I have nothing there but little blonde hairs (no real sideburns)... So, I'm leaning more towards cutting them straight across.

Also, how, exactly, do you "pack?"
Title: Re: How can I look more male?
Post by: J.T. on March 24, 2008, 07:23:30 PM
that's what i did, cut them straight across.  but i've noticed a lot of guys just go without sideburns altogether also.

packing, uh i don't pack so i can't really help you with that one... but it creates a bulge.   they're prosthetics.  or you could just stuff a sock down there too i'm sure.

I'd suggest letting your hair grow out some. It's difficult to get the perfect cut when you're transitioning. Too long and it might seem girly, too short and it will accentuate the feminine shape of your head. Try different cuts- longer in the front shorter in the back, maybe longer up top but shorter as you get lower. Try to find what accentuates your masculine features.

Thanks for the tip. ^_^ I'm trying out a virtual hair makeover site that allows me to see various hairstyles on a 3-D photo of myself. I'll browse through those and see which ones make me look most masculine.

You do have some muscle on you Kris, looking good! I would not have guessed that from your
first picture. The last pictures are much more masculine looking.

Nice job on not smiling :)

Hehehehe, thank you very much, Amanda! :D I was in Army JROTC for a year, so we had to do up to 500 push-ups in one class period. I LOVED that class!! I miss it so badly now that I've graduated. :( But I especially loved it because I was accepted into the group of guys as if I were one, and I was the happiest that I've ever been in my life. I remember that my one friend belched at the lunch table, followed by one of my own (and mine was louder ;)), and we started cracking up. I joked about offending the girls behind us, and he said, "That's all right; we're guys." He got this confused look on his face, then said, "Well, er... I am..." I wanted to be like, "You were right the first time!" but of course I didn't.

As far as your hair...

Switch your hairdresser.  They're used to cutting your hair as female.  Also, don't go to the ultra-hip queer shop in town- you'll get a dyke cut.  Ideally you should check out a local barber shop.  If they're treating you strangely, tell them you've been cast in a play in a male role.  You need them to help you look as masculine as possible.

I am going to be posting some pics of myself in another post, with this same question.

But one thing I did do, earlier in my transition, was to get a big bulky watch from Walmart for 15 dollars.
It had all sorts of things on it I never use, a compass, and who knows what else.  But it looked really "male".

Unfortunately it got stolen when I was at the chiropractor -- people always remarked on it!  I got another, but it's not as helpful.

The bulky watch seemed to help people see me as a bit more male, I experimented wearing it, and not, and it did really help, though it was heavy to wear :)

I, too, had large breasts, and tried a hundred things with binding.  Mostly what helped was to use 2 - 3 methods of binding, with several shirts (I was easily a DDD, so that was kinda the issue, not how I was binding).  It was hot, too many layers, but it made things look better.

I am now recovering from surgery, still not able to go really much without a binder, so waitingfor that day.....
I wish I had gotten the surgery sooner, I would suggest trying to get it soon, if you are clear, and what you want to do is pass.  It seems to make a difference, already, even out a bit in public with the binder on.

Straightening the base of your sideburns will help, right away.

I found buying male shoes early on, and also "cargo pants" in the men's dept., where there are lots of pockets, and wearing them low, may have disguised a bit more of my hips, too.

Sweatshirts were a good top layer, once I was bound, sometimes with a corduroy button down, that I left open most of the way (cause of the heat!) and just buttoned it right around my chest area.

Good luck.

I was "male" with even higher cheekbones than yours, much higher really and
this is actually a very attractive trait in males.

There's very little difference between an attractive male and female, look
at the male runway models.

Put some muscles on you, use loose fitting clothes (which won't work really
good until those muscles are there to support them).

The eyebrows could be difficult if you've been plucking them for awhile, anyway,
let them grow in and see what you've got.

I think that the proper facial hair, you'd look very attractive right now. Look
at the actor in Bend in like Beckham and "the Tudors", and Match Point,
he's got a "femme" face yet women find him very very attractive.

In hollywood, most leading men have boyish faces which is what you've got,
that's why they always have a bit of facial hair on them :-). Look at Brad Pitt,
he's got less of a jawline than his wife HAHA.

Thanks, guys. ;D

I cut my sideburns myself today, and they don't look half bad. Also, I found some of my brothert's clothes, and I put those on today just to feel what it was like (nobody's home, LoL). I experimented with makeup tricks, too, and I'll be posting those in another thread here.

Thanks for all the advice! I can't wait until I save up some money to go buy some new pants, shoes, watch, etc.
