Title: When can you start T or have surgery?
Post by: sneakersjay on April 08, 2008, 02:08:03 PM
How long after starting therapy/counseling does it take before you can be prescribed T?  Thanks!  What are the requirements other than an absoluted diagnosis of GID?  And you have to live for a year as your gender before surgery?

Thanks!

It's up to the therapist to decide when you're ready for T. I think the SOC say three months at least.

And different surgeons have different requirements. Most just want a letter from a therapist. No, you don't have to live as your gender before surgery. I didn't go ft till after chest surgery.

Thanks, Dennis!  I'm talking with my therapist this week and for the first time will tell her about my GID.  My guess is she will have to refer me to someone else for counseling for this, or maybe not (I think she's a lesbian).  I'm still not sure if I want T, but was wanting info on times and stuff.

yep, it depends.  i know i felt like i had to rush into it, but the time went by surprisingly fast and i'm glad it went at the pace it did.  after starting therapy to the time i got my first shot was about 5.5 months.

i went back and forth on the T thing for a bit, mostly to do with my belief system.  that's what the therapy is there for, to work things out and make sure you're ready etc.

I started with top surgery because to me, it was the most important. I think every person is different...Deal with what is most pressing to you. Camden
