Are they do-able?
I heard that doctors won't do it unless it's like uterine cancer.
If you can, how much and WHO will do it just for the sake of having it done for FTM?
I'm not sure.
I'm a lot older than you are and I have fibroids and my doctor said it would be optional (this was before I was transitioning). As soon as I get better insurance (it's preexisting and current insurance won't do it) I'll get it taken out as my first step. Then I'll worry about starting T.
It is possible, I've been thinking about it, but from what I've heard how easy it is depends on your age. They don't like sterilizing young people. Although I suppose the further into your transition you are the easier it'd be - I'm pre everything, and I imagine if you're already on T and/or had top surgery they might be more likely to accept it. I know people have done it though.
Where I live they wont do it to young people unless you have a health problem.. my partner has polisitic ovaries really bad and they wont do it on her... so I think you have to be really far into your transistion to actually have it done..
I still don't understand why anyone would want to have a hysto unless there was a risk of health problems. I can't see or feel my internal organs -- neither can anyone else -- so they might as well not be there. Testosterone stops your periods, so what's the point? I'd rather spend the money (and time, and pain) on other kinds of surgery. Or a moped. ;)

For me, personally, I am repulsed by the fact that my body is capable of bearing a child. Until I am permanently sterilized, I will never feel comfortable in my body. Plus, I'm not sure I want to be on T all my life, so that doesn't help with the periods, and I don't want to be on birth control or anything to stop them. I just want it out.
I just got funding for one approved by our medical system, although it took some difficulty. There are some surgeons in the states who specialize in doing them for FtM's. I'm not sure off the top of my head who they are, but I'm sure they'd want some documentation, like a therapist letter to rely on. Also not sure if there's an age thing. I'm 45 so it was a non-issue for me.

If you read my "Female Type Visit" thread, you will know why I want this done...
I have a few reasons - Brady's is one of them. I've gone for my last one of those exams, ever. Woot!
Also, according to my surgeon and a bunch of guys who've had it done, even after the periods stop, the ovaries are still producing estrogen, and having them out means it's possible my beard will fill in. And I may be able to reduce my dose of T and go on the patch afterwards, so no more shots (although I'm going to wait till the beard fills in :) )
And my GP was concerned about the lack of studies about risks in retaining those organs.
It won't cost my any money because it's funded, and hopefully the pain isn't too bad. It'll be laparoscopic, and the surgeon said that barring any complications, I'll only need a week off work.

My feelings exactly. Plus, I'm squeamish enough about top surgery.
But I get the reasons some want it done. Just saw the Robert Eads documentary. There's just not enough research yet on long term effects of T on the female organs. I'll risk it though.
You can get a hysto done with little cost to you.
What I did was post-top surgery and having been on T for a few years I started to get serious pain (caused by the internal chick parts). Obviously, to go to a surgeon who does SRS/GRS surgeries you're going to pay 10k + because of the hospital costs. So I found a woman's clinic (hey, I swallowed my pride and did what it took) in a nearby more liberal city that did income-based services. The main doctor was a very liberal type woman who'd never met a transguy before. I told her my situation (ie: been on T for this long, live full time as a guy, having pain, no insurance, armed services doctors wouldn't ever give me a hysto even though I tried from the moment I hit puberty, at that time I was a complete virgin, ect.). She spoke with my therapist and doc that prescribed hormones, and she agreed to give me the hysto. She charged me $200 for her fee, and then I was responsible for hospital costs...which I got covered under a state-wide program that helps pay for hospital costs for low-income people. So my 12k surgery cost me about $500. The timeline was about 2 weeks from me finding her to my having the surgery completed.
I had it done vaginally (the doc didn't want to do it abdominally because recovery time is greater, it's more painful, ect.). I had a slight infection at the small incision line on my abdomen (my own fault as I was traveling and lifting heavy bags and I was told not to), but otherwise the pain was negligible and I healed just fine. The effects of T became more noticeable (ie: I got thicker and darker facial hair and the hair on my arms got darker...my voice dropped a bit more too) after the hysto.
So it can be done...just make sure you find the right person and place. Look into what kind of low-income programs (for medical services) are in your area. There's a will...there's a way. What I would do is once you start hormones I'd find a OBGYN doc that may or may not have experience with transguys, and explain your situation. If you haven't changed your gender yet and have insurance, chances are you could get the entire thing covered.
Bah I hate not having money :( Don't you wish you could just have someone hand you like $100,000 and tell you to go get every surgery you ever wanted?! And have your T paid for forever?
I wanna do it but I gotta have my consulation & do more reasearch on it first. I got dr. Bowers in mind. Last time I checked she was chargin' more then 11k for a hysto and 3k for a meta w/o implants. dunno if her fees have went up.
Chris,
If you're on T and have had top surgery and/or been living as a male, Dr. Bowers would probably do a hysto without requiring any kind of letter of referral. Her fees, last I checked, were $11,400 (up from last year, when it was 10k) and it included her services and hospital costs. Her meta without the implants runs $3,400 now (up from the 3k I paid in Feb.). The implants she doesn't like to do, just because of all of the problems associated with them (extrusion, discomfort, ect), but she does em for $3,800. There's no 'savings' if you get stuff done at once either. Nice lady though...she's been very accommodating to me to make sure I'm happy though I do think she has a bias towards MtFs (my partner and I both noticed she was more personable and such with the MtF patients than us).
Right now i'm keeping my sex marker as female 'cause i heard that you could get a hysto covered by insurance this way. Does anyone know if this is true?

All I want is my consultation but I gotta do more research first. I aint crazy 'bout havin bottom surgery either but I'll get it done if my insides arent messed up in the proces. What I got now works great so no rush  ;)
