For the blood testing etc for prescribing HRT, does the patient need to fast for 12 hours ahead of time?
In my neck of the woods it's required as they normally test for a full range of things. Even now when I go for my 3 month tests to check my levels they require me to fast.
Steph
I agree with Steph,
but it depends on your DR. and the types of test or tests he is asking to do .
I would check with him thou for clarification
My doc just says nothing after 10pm. My test are normally earling in the morning, so I eat right after.

As mentioned and to echo thoughts, it depends on which tests.
They(Drs Office) should say if fasting is required and the lab should also ask that you have if it is needed.
Hang in there Elaine, now is when it gets... fun.
Thank you everyone
If you have questions about lab tests or what they mean try a Web site called "Lab tests Online" they can help you understand a test and what the results mean.
I find sites like this help me ask somewhat intelligent questions when I see the doctor to discuss the results.
Hi Elaine:
It all depends on what type of results your doctor wants from these blood tests. If your physician wants to find out how your liver is responding to the estrogen, or at what level your testosterone is after HRT, you normally don't need to fast. However, if your doctor wants to know your cholesterol levels, which also change with HRT, then you do need to fast.
If you don't understand your lab results, you can always request a written explanation of such results, or if you prefer you can call the hospital where you had your lab work performed and ask the nurse on call to explain the results you obtained.

I always make sure to have the tests done before my appointment. Then when I get to the doctor's office I ask the staff to make me a copy of the results which I have in front of me when my doctor and I discuss them. I learn all sorts of good stuff that way.
I think it works very well and my doctor doesn't seem to mind either.

That's a great idea Helen, I'm going to do that next time.
