MISSION VALLEY – Mayor Jerry Sanders was hailed as a friend of the gay community before he gave a welcoming speech yesterday to a national meeting of the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay and lesbian political organization.
Sanders gained the admiration of gay, lesbian and transgender Americans last year when he reversed a long-held position and announced support of gay marriage. The tearful speech, in which he acknowledged having a gay daughter, became a favorite on the YouTube Web site.
