How do you get your hair to be so smooth and silky? You all know it, the stuff you see on advertisements. I know it CAN be done - my friends have their hair like that. Also, my hair is wavy, so is there a way to keep it wavy?
I've got extremely thick, wavy hair. Use a conditioner with a lot of moisturizer. Rinse, then put in a leave in conditioner. Leaves it really silky. Won't take out the wave.
my hair just gets so oily. i don't really know what kind of hair i have. the strands are just thick and straight.

From personal experience, I think the options are, in order of effectiveness;
1. Be a model or celebrity with lots of money to spend at the salon,
2. Be born with the right genes,
3. Shampoo your hair no more than once a week, and never condition.
I have found that the more I screw with my hair, the more frizzy and wavy it gets, the natural scalp oils that build up over time seem to be the best smoothing gel out there.

those sound like impossible things to do.

I can say with confidence, #3 is very possible to do, and the most viable solution, at least for me.

my do starts to look like do-do if i don't wash it. go with without washing one day? sometimes. washing without conditioner would do very strange things indeed. gonna try Nero's suggestion.

Careful with moisturizer.
I was told to use some, when I did, I could actual feel my hair knotting up as I washed it. Had to condition it twice with my older conditioner to get it to let go. It was like someone dumped concrete in my hair. It took months for it to completely recovered from that.
Leave-ins make my hair feel sticky the next day, but once brushed out they are great.
Mine is the exact opposite of yours, thin and straight. It is hard to do anything with it really.
I don't know if you are on estrogen, but it does make your hair stronger which means it will look silkier and smoother. Cosmetics wise, I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but invest in a good antifrizz serum as it will make your hair really nice (just don't overdo it).

could you please name some brands?
the only goo that doesn't really mess up my hair is Wax Works by Paul Mitchell. (Love that stuff) but that isn't exactly anti-frizz serum.

Sure, I really like Farouk's "Biosilk" Silk Therapy.

number 3 is possible to do, but it's not a good thing to do.

Exactly, rather than losing the softness of conditioner make sure it's completely rinsed off before shutting the faucet, that will help with shine.
I recently asked my stylist the same thing and got the following:
http://www.amazon.com/Lanza-Anti-Aging-Plant-Serum/dp/B000V72VUY/ref=sr_1_159?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1208615251&sr=1-159 (http://www.amazon.com/Lanza-Anti-Aging-Plant-Serum/dp/B000V72VUY/ref=sr_1_159?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1208615251&sr=1-159)
This stuff is amazing. All it takes is a tiny bit and it lasts for a few days.

You know, you might not be able to afford the daily salon visit, but its well worth the money to go talk to a good hairdresser/stylist and have them examine your hair and tell you what you should use. Hair comes in with a huge difference between people, and not everyones hair responds well to the same products. It also depends on how much you blow dry it, dye it, if its long or short, in a perm or not - really, talk to a pro.

My pleasure.
I had horribly frizzy dry hair that when the wind blew made it look like a brillo pad, I listened to advice from many peoples
ideas on hair care and I have settled on a sort of strange way of dealing with it but it works wonders on my hair.
First making sure my hair cleaned and dried I put extra virgin olive oil in the palm of my hand (about a dime size amount, I use a
condiment bottle like in restaurants which they have at walmart for under a dollar) I pick a section and use a hair clip to keep the section seperate. I then work the oil into my hair starting at the clip and pulling toward the ends I repeat the step until all sections are done. I dont rub into scalp just pull through hair. I wait 10 mins then I use L.A. Looks wet hair look gel, the keratin amino acids in the gel
makes the hair shiny I then wait 20 minutes (the olive oil keeps the gel from hardening) then using a wide toothed comb (do not brush)
I run the comb slowly through my hair in the hairs natural direction for 10 minutes. Using luke warm water not hot water and less shampoo than I would usually use and using the tips of my fingers I rub the scalp avoid pulling the shampoo through my hair just concentrating on the scalp then rinse, then I use conditioner avoiding the scalp just pulling it through the hair strands Wait 2 minutes.
Here's where a detachable shower head comes in handy. I change the temp of the water so it is cool to the touch (not cold) I bend over so that my head is upside down and starting at the neck line I rinse out the conditioner just shaking my head lightly I do not touch my hair with my hands just let the water and shaking my head do the rinsing while remaining upside down. When done I drape a towel over my head to catch the water drips but I do not rub or even pat it with the towel just leave it there for a minute then I run my fingers through my hair to pull it away from my head I do not brush or comb it while it is wet and I let air dry (you can use a spray mist bottle and style it after it has dried if desired). this has worked on my hair now it feels like silk even when I get out of bed in the morning.
Tip: Your Pillow case can damage and break your hair from friction as you turn at night also it sucks the moisure right out of your hair
to remedy this you can use a shower cap to protect your hair (not a cloth one) which can take a little getting used to or you can get yourself a silk pillowcase believe me you won't regret it.
I noticed that some say that their hair is knotting while washing it, when shampooing the hair concentrate on the scalp with fingers don't worry about the strands they will be cleaned just by rinsing the shampoo through it. If trying to remove hairspray, gel, etc... just pull through hair. When conditioning pull the conditioner through your hair. never palm your head when washing or conditioning and do not use circular motion's this causes exessive tugging, kinks, and knots it up. Hair is weakest when wet treat it gently. surprisingly many times it is the way we are treating our hair not the products we use and sometimes we dont even realize it. usually the back of the hair tends to be worse than the top I have noticed some bad traits that I have now improved like when watching TV or just relaxing on a recliner or sofa I tend to keep my head against the back even when I moved my head that can't be good even when not moving the fabric is absorbing the moisture from your hair. or in a car when resting your head against the headrest, the car is constantly vibrating when it is running or moving and the friction is stripping your hair. be mindful of how your hair is treated even when sleeping hair can be damaged.
oh! and one other thing is if you are growing out your hair (mine was a half inch long last december) you have to realize that although your hair may be growing equally (which is likely rare at best), the positions of the hair causes the ends of the hair to be scattered unevenly on your head which makes your hair feel rough or damaged when really it is not.
sorry for rambling but I honestly believe these little things matter when it comes to hair and wanted to share it with all of you here.
Kisses.......Nicole
