Nationwide event, rally at UT marked by hours of silence

After spending several hours without speaking, members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community broke the silence at a rally Friday afternoon at the Capitol.
The Day of Silence started 12 years ago as a protest against the harassment experienced by gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students. It has since spread, with schools across the country taking part in the national movement. Participants hand out "speaking cards" that explain the reasons for remaining silent during the day. This year, the national event honored Lawrence King, a 15-year-old California student who was shot and killed by a classmate in February in an alleged hate crime because of King's open sexual orientation.
