"Over the last several years, transgender people have become much more
integrated into what is now called the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender) community. That community's leadership has been
making a variety of demands, some of which - like a federal hate-crime
law based on gender identity - have made significant progress, while
others - like federal job-discrimination protections based on gender
identity - remain stalled"
