Jin Xing chose to choreograph "Carmina" with only the most cursory acknowledgment of Orff's dramatic trajectory. A transsexual artist and former army colonel, she has received worldwide attention for undergoing one of the first sex-change operations in the People's Republic. To what extent the personal transformation has shaped her perspective on dance is difficult to know.
