SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - As soon as the state Supreme Court announced Thursday morning that same-sex couples had a constitutional right to marry, the celebration began on the steps of City Hall with crowds of gay men and lesbians cheering and sobbing. Some said they were exhausted from weeks of sleepless anxiety, waiting on the court ruling.

(05-15) 19:21 PDT -- The real partying had to wait for a more decent hour, but the talk in the Castro all day Thursday was about marriage.
Cheers went up along Castro Street just after 10 a.m. when the California Supreme Court's ruling that same-sex marriage is constitutional was announced, and friends and acquaintances out walking their dogs stopped on the street to exchange congratulations.
By late evening, more than a thousand people had gathered on Castro Street, part of which was closed to traffic. People waved rainbow and California flags, danced to the picks of a disc jockey and crowded into neighborhood bars to celebrate the ruling.
