"In my own practice, transgendered patients describe a lifelong,
pervasive incongruity between their physical sex and their emotional
status. Personally, I can't imagine a much more hellish existence.
Transgendered people exist. Gender reassignment surgery is considered
an effective, appropriate therapy for some of these individuals. The
withholding of such surgery can lead to severe psychological problems
and suicide, as has occurred in my own practice."
