Title: A fire station problem!
Post by: const on May 30, 2008, 12:07:15 PM
Okay, we live next to the fire station (stupid ass parents of mine.) Every weekday, for about 30 seconds, for some damn reason, they blare a damn siren sooo loud my ears bleed! I keep telling myself that WWII ended. I mean for sake it sounds like a damn air raid siren from yonder bygone days. I don't know what to do. Are there any suggestions for what I can do about this problem?

I'm sorry for sounding like this because I am furious at the moment. By the way, I didn't know where to put this; so, I've stuck it here.

You could cover your ears.  Or be away if they do it at a specific time each day.  After all, its no doubt worse not to have a fire station I would think.

Oh I guess for the same reason that on noon of the first tuesday of every month all the air raid sirens go off in SF.  Its important to test those emergency systems from time to time.  I work on a major street with a fire station two blocks away, we get them going past all the time, just put your fingers in your ears, it does pass.

We live like right next to this noise machine called the fire station. Not two blocks away. They are complete ->-bleeped-<-s in my opinion for doing that crap.

Of course, I'm not sure what blocks distance is. I guess I should be more pissed at my dumb ass parents for not thinking a bit more wisely before buying a god damn house.

In addition, the first year we were here they didn't do this ->-bleeped-<-. But now, it is every weekday.

OH, BOY! Would I love to live next to the fire station! I'm used to loud noises, we live right by the train tracks. But wow.. maybe they'd let me see their truck! ;D

I'm sorry I don't have anything really against the fire station or fire men. But seriously, this is so annoying.

there are some very good earplugs around if it's a same time of day thing
depending on your house you may be able to reduse the noise through sound insulation

That may be the wisest thing I've heard yet. Honestly, I'm going to buy me a pair.

I lived on a major cross town ambulance route, bet we had a couple every hour on Friday and Saturday nights.  After the first week I never really heard them anymore.  I now live overlooking a creek.  It's thick and lush and I get wild turkeys and deer all the time, but, the other side of the creek, and I can't even see it through the woods, is the regional trauma center and the helicopters are very loud coming and going, but I almost never notice them anymore either.  Earplugs, or headphones, heavy metal can drown out just about anything.

I guess I'm just very sensitive to noise, maybe. Thanks for the replies. I will buy a pair of ear plugs.

Oh, it IS loud. I've stood next to one as it was leaving and I threw up.

Man... that ruined MY dreams of wearing that pretty uniform... :(

When I become a fireman I'll remember to wait for siren checks til early afternoon, hopefuly most people will be gone at that time.  :P

Poly, I feel your pain. But it's that tone-deaf feline whining that emenates from cruisers that has me tearing my hair out. A bit too familiar for my taste, lol.

I know this all too well.
Some people are far more sensitive to noise. Some get that way after being exposed to a lot of it.

I was never sensitive to noise before I worked around jet aircraft for a while, now certain tones drive me insane, as in send me to the asylum insane. It doesn't have to be loud either, just letting a phone ring with a normal ringer for too long and I will either fly off in a rage or just curl up in the fetal position, I seriously cannot handle it. Same with children screaming, they hit that right note and I start to lose it.

As for the firemen, they are required to test the equipment regularly and you can't blame them, they were there first.
