Hi All,
Just thought it would be nice to hear what others listen to for relaxing and just mellowing out. Also looking for new things to listen to and experience during relaxation! Thought others might enjoy having this poll too.
Peace,
Taylor
Alison Krause & Union Station
Steph
I chose jazz 'cause that's what I usually listen to but I was disappointed that I couldn't pick more than one.
Some of the classical pieces, andantes by classical and romantic period composers are very relaxing to listen to.
helen
I had to vote for Instrumental. This leaves it open for celtic, movie themes and New Age.
Chaunte
If I listen to Allison Kraus & Union Station, I can't help but sing along. It's great music! My hope is that as I stretch the range of my voice, I will be better able to achieve a more feminine speaking voice.
country soothes all that ails me!

For me it seems to depend entirely upon my mood, typically anywhere from Metal to New Age. *shrug* If it calls, it calls ;)
I was raised on classical music. If I need to relax I throw in some Bach. It takes me back to a place where I could just lay there and listen to my father play Bach on his pipe organ when I was a little girl.
:icon_sleep:
Pam
i had to say jazz but not just listening to it but playing it on the drums as well very therapeutic
Hi Taylor:
I voted for classical piano (especially by Yvar Mikashoff ;))!
Just in case... if any of you suffers from insomnia (like me) classical piano music does wonders, and the best thing: no side effects!!! ;D

Forgive me, Pam, but I can't resist...!
Did you hear about the computer programmer why was trying to write a program to generate "new" classical music?
It didn't work. His Bach was worse than his byte! ::)

ANd when you are baroque, you are out of Monet!
And if its not baroque, don't fix it!
(Dear Lord, I needed this! :D) Chaunte
Those of you that Listen to Jazz and Classical...tell me your favorites I want to expand my collection...thanks!
Oh and as for sleeping to classical..... when my daughter was real young we used to put on Classical in the car when traveling...and in like 3 minutes she was dropping those eye lids lol.... how it worked?? Who cares? It just thankfully did!
Peace,
Taylor
I don't usually listen to music to relax, but I've found that smooth jazz works for me. I don't know anybody specifically, I just flip to the readio station and listen to whatever.
Melissa
I chose classical, although it would seem that I like everything (Beethoven being the exception, guy had personal problems).
Nero
Vivaldi - Concerto for Guitar in D Major would always bring me to sobbing tears when I was four years old. I still don't know why, but it *means* something to me.
38 years later and it hasn't lost it's effect :)
all:
varies, beethovens 3dfor regaining power, vivaldi's 4stations for regaining vigor, joshua tree(U2) for inspiration and feeling my blue side, pink floyd for most anything, pearl jam(specially black) to ground myself, lakota songs 4...
dido+mooulin rouge+ christine guerra and alternative: tool, creed, indigo girls, tori amos, countig crows,...wow and celtic music for background.. what a wonderfulk world ...is great to be alive!
love sheila
Thanks All!
Melissa I am like you.... I put the Jazz station on and it has the effect I want...but have no clue one from the other ....
Does anyone here listen to James Blunt? If not check him out the guy can flat out sing and write. ( Not Jazz just real good music)
I personally play a couple of instruments and just gave my daughter my guitar for her 21st birthday. It was hand made in Italy and given to me when I was 17.....however now I need another guitar lol.
I go into Itunes once a month and check out things, and will take the names and pieces offered up in here and plug them in and check it out. Truly appreciate all the feedback!
Anyone have other suggestions keep them coming...
Peace,
Taylor
I listen to soft rock... Well I mean very soft rock like Bread to relax. The rest don't really make me relax. Classical makes me go crazy trying to figure out what instruments are playing and such. Perhaps that's why most modern music bores me... it's all guitar and drums. ::)
The poll list just isn't extensive enough. I listen to alternative rock when I'm in a good mood, hard rock when I'm ticked off, classical when I'm thinking, soft rock when I'm feeling nostalgic, etc. This is all while relaxing. I guess I'm just eclectic.
Rafe
What's commonly refered to as classical. It cover so much from pre-renaissance to modern. I find that there is a peice to fit most any mood I find my self in. I love listening to Wanda Landowska performing the "Well Tempered Clavier", Albinoni's Adagio, and "Carmena Burana" when I really need to cool down.
Ummmmmm this isnt a fair question.... I dont listen to any of the listed types when trying to relax..... I listen to clasic rock, or some of the softer more melodic punk or metal... or sometimes goth industral..... :P
come on now, there's no way there's no other country lovers out there!

Country is my favourite. I love listening to Alison Krauss. And I love to ride horses, do it as often as I can :)
Cowgirl Steph
I like country too, but I've fallen out of listening to it for many years. Occasionally, I'll listen to country just to play some songs I know.

As long as it's not Hank Williams. His voice just grates on my nerves. But his music & lyrics I enjoy (when played by others)

I listened to country for about a year in my teens. All because I fell in love with a country girl. :icon_no:
I remember listening to Alan Jackson, Martina Mcbride, and Billy Ray Cyrus. They qualify as country singers, right? When she disappeared, so did my taste for country music. That "Achy Breaky Heart" cd in particular had to go!
As for music to relax to:
Unfortunately, I have been subjected to a lot of rap and R&B due to my environment and lifestyle.
So I would say I tolerate it as something familiar and comfortable. I use it for background music, when I'm not feeling particularly creative. When my muse graces me with her presence, I go for something more melodious.
I loved Biggie and I must admit to liking Eminem's stuff. Oh, the shame. :icon_redface:
Nero
Not a terrible admission, Nero; I've been known to enjoy some Eminem once in awhile. As for country, though, I only like the few songs associated with memories for me... specifically, "Any Man of Mine" by Shania Twain, since I remember that as a freshman in high school I greatly appreciated the girls on the cross-country team doing a lip-sync and sexy dance to it at one of our meets. Mmmm...
Rafe
Right on, there is a little country in you out there! Way to go cowgirl Steph, horse riding is meant for the real cowpoke out there (and the english)!
I started admitting I was a country lover about a year ago, I was a closet country lover. Why is it that it has become so embarassing for people to admit that they listen to county? I now drive a pick up truck (my little cowgirl had it before she met me, it was meant to be) and proudly sporting a "JRFM" sticker on it which is the local country station round these parts (it's really starting to sink into my brain!). It's a red and white bumpersticker with the Canadian maple leaf on it... it had me at "hello".
Wear your country lovin' on your sleeve I say!
Tino
Country? :D
Personally I'm not big on it... there's maybe one or two country songs that are okay, but for the most part I can't stand it.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrr surely you mean Cowgirl Steph :) and you should see this little cowgirl ride, yahoooooo. I've only been thrown once, we were golloping down a hill side, and we we got to the bottom the horse went left and I went right, OUCH and that broke a rib but it didn't stop me :) I this little girl loves to ride...

Trace Adkins is nothing to sneeze at. Great music and... he's a good lookin' guy! (Dear Lord! Did I really just say that?! :icon_eyebrow: )
Reba is always great. She is TINY!!!!!
And I can't forget Gordon Lightfoot & Connie Caldor!

I´d love Sax. It sounds is exciting.
Bye
I enjoy smooth jazz mostly when relaxing. I mostly listen to Duke Ellington, John Coltrain, Django Reinhardt, Billy Holiday, Etta James, Sarah Vaughn and other jazz greats. I just tune my radio in and relax usually. I also like jazz fusion like Jeff Beck, Al Dimeola, Pat Metheny, Steeley Dan, Jaco Pastorius and Weather Report just to name a few. ;)
Shannon
I've always enjoyed instrumental swing jazz big band music. In the past I played drums in several very local country beer joint bands, and have a liking for older traditional country rather than the over engineered popular rock-country of more recent times. The drum playing side of me goes for big bands of the Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich style. Hey, maybe I could start a new group, The Cross-Stickers. (A play on a drum technic and....well, you know. Anyway, the vote is for Big Band.
Susan Kay
Victoria,
I learned to play guitar from Breads music many years ago. I still like to listen to them.
Peace,
Taylor
It has to be classical when I am trying to relax and chill out after a stressful day at work...
For ordinary everyday listening.... anything goes (I tune into various radio stations during the day). My tastes in music vary greatly.
In my car, driving on the roads here, I like heavy rock or alternative rock..... Currently In my CD changer I have Nickleback, The Darkness, U2 and Green Day...... American Idiot being a particular favourite of mine.. ::)
Buffy
New Age and Trance
I listen to all kinds. Was listening to what an old roommate of mine referred to as "angry boy music" last night on the way into work. It was a good shift. :D
New Age, Trance, Symphonic/Industrial
And anything by Aetherius (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=75335)
Enya!!!!!!
new age and smooth jazz
I actually like hip/hop and Rap when I chill out! But I like most music anyhow!
I love Celtic music to relax to. Enya, Clannad, Celtic Woman, etc.
Classical music and Nature sounds (rain & ocean waves)
(it even soothes my insomnia sometimes)
There's no 'rock' option! :P
I listen to rock...or classical..or nature sounds.
Hmm I voted Smooth Jazz but I mostly listen to electronic music like trance and ambient when I want to relaxxxx.
Such as Hammock, one of my favorite ambient bands!
I picked instrumental for anime and video game music.
However I do like to relax to zen music and glam rock and biker-like music.
I do love a good violin too.
Harry James, Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, Dorsey Bros, Guy Lombardo
I have a mix from allot of genres. It has:
Country
Christian
Hard Rock
Soft Rock
Big Band
Irish (new age)
70s
80s
90s
Instrumental... anything with steel drums ;D
Music which takes me to a different place when I close my eyes. More often than not it's trance music which relaxes me most. Some tracks just have a quality whereby they can make you feel like you're somewhere else, somewhere away from the grind of daily life and free, floating with the strains of the music.
This one, for example, with my eyes closed it evokes images of a beach party in Ibiza, at dusk, with a cool breeze blowing through my hair while the sea laps against the shore and everyone with their hands in the air while this is played out among a laser show which dances in the darkening sky. It makes me go all shivery when I hear it - probably the gorgeous vocals.
Lange - follow me (dark moon remix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFN-DADBiUc#)
For me, it is Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey. Benny Goodman. Anything Big Band Swing (circa 1940's).
Glenn Miller - In The Mood [HQ] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CI-0E_jses&feature=related#)
Moonlight Serenade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n92ATE3IgIs&feature=related#)
Stompin' At The Savoy (Benny Goodman Montage) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rifhroClGI#)
I can't say instrumental for videogame music, that's just music I get pumped up or groove to.
I'll say New Age instead, as I use a lot of binaural/isochronic beat soundtracks to fall asleep or meditate to. This being my biggest example: I fall asleep to it every night, and wake up to it every morning.
Dr. Jeffrey Thompson - Ethereal Dreams (http://youtu.be/pu1PkSf4bs4)
I voted jazz, but it was not about one single genre for me, I like certain classical pieces and recordings, I like the music of my youth, and I like women's folk and rock music.
To pick one artist too really chill out per this topic and have in the background would be Andreas Vollenweider, the Swiss harp master composer, performer....My soul mate and I both enjoy his music a lot in the background.....
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andreas_Vollenweider
