Title: How did you pick your last name?
Post by: Terra on June 14, 2008, 09:31:24 PM
I was going through Krystal's thread when I got hit by a question. How do you, if you choose to, pick a last name? This might be silly, but I am kinda curious as i'm thinking of an unusual last name; Koga. Means wolf in japanese, and my friend was the one who suggested it. (It came from thinking up mythological names for my first name, Loki was the top of that list. :D)

West, because the West is the best, and that's where I am.  I could also be the illigemate daughter of James West, which would explain a lot.

I am actually keeping my surname but going back to the traditional spelling. Which doesn't matter, as no one can pronounce it either way.

Years ago I changed my last name from my unpronounceable birth-name, to my great-great-grandmother's maiden name, which is much cooler and is an actual English word.  I figured my days of having my last name slaughtered were over.  And then the judge took one look at my new name, and immediately mispronounced it.  Aaargh!  ::)

When I first started this endeavor, I modified my last name to Vann and went by Vicki Vann (Victoria).  My last name was Van Fleet and I did not want to bring embarrassment to my family.  Once my family found out, they wanted me to keep my last name, so I did.  When I changed my legal name, I went with Victoria Lynn Van Fleet.  Everything has been wonderful since then, and it feels so good to be called Miss Van Fleet...but Mrs. Van Fleet...WHOA!!!  I am NOT my mother...yet!

I have kept my last name, and have no plans on changing it unless I get married.  Have I thought about changing it?  Sure.  The two top candidates are Sperling and Olson.  If I moved to Denmark, blond haired, blue eyed Lisbeth Olson would be as annonymous as you can get.

I kept the same last name I've always had. Never occurred to me to change it.

I've toyed with the idea of creating a new last name. I floated it with my wife when we got married to start a new family name that was entirely our own but she liked the history of my last name (as in linking to my ethnic ancestry). So we kept it.

How I would decide I don't know. Perhaps just throw names out there till one stuck. Kruger (I like the highlander movie - "I'm in disguise"), Manson, Munroe, the artist formally known as...etc..

My first name is a morph of my given name.

My last name is staying the same.  Afterall, it puts me in the lineage of Tuathal Techtmar!

Well lacking all imagination, I kept my surname and first name, and just changed the gender on my middle name. OK I changed the spelling of my first name too, but not by much and it still sounds the same.

I kept my maiden name. And unless my partner makes me an honest woman and marries me and insists she be the 'husband' >:D I'll keep it.

She wouldn't insist on that: "There are too many husbands in the world already!"

Right now I am not planning on changing my last name. LOL I am having a hard enough time finding my first name. I may feel differently in the future  but for now I am just taking one step at a time.

I don't plan on changing my last name unless my dad gets more crappy. Then I will go with my moms maiden name and if that don't work out I have no idea.

I chose my last name after making a list of my top ten favorite choices. My family is kind of freaked out that I am changing my last name, but I have no intentions of changing my mind and I have made that VERY clear to everyone.

I didn't change my last name. I never saw the need to and I'm proud to be a member ofmy family. Perhaps it is different if your family disowns you or you need to make a complete break from the past but that was never the case for me.

Kept it.  I'm proud of it, I've earned degrees with it, keeps things simple.

That's why I use an AKA, and not a legal name change as they will not change the name on the degrees.

I checked with my professional school and they will change my name on my transcripts if I submit the court ordered name change.  Then further down the page there is a place to order a new diploma.  So I hope I can change the name, then a few months later order a new diploma.  Not sure about my undergrad degree.

Professional licensing just requires the court order and a name change form.

I checked with my grad school and they have no process to change it.  Not that it matters, whats important is what you learned, not the paper.

I'll keep my surname... except if my dad gets a third face. if that does happen, though, I'll have a look at our family tree. *smiles*

Well, Origonaly I was going to keep the family surname...

But then I went through all kinds of hell with them and was going to shorten my name and use my picked middle name as the surname <cuz its just baddass>

Well, now I'm going to inherate the family buisness <most of the hell has been worked out/through> and I'm thinking of either going back to plan A, or moving to plan C which is a hyphonation of both names LoL

I've not had any problem changing my name on the records of any of the schools I contacted.  (I figured I wouldn't even try the conservative Christian seminary.)

Forgive me for asking, but what's the reason for it? Before reading this thread, I hadn't been aware that last-name changing was done much as a part of transition.

At the time I changed my name, I had been disowned and was going through some really difficult times at work where some of my church leaders were in control.  There was no way I was going to keep my surname. I had become ashamed to use it.  My parents had no issues with me changing my name in this way at the time but now regret that posturing.

When I was out in drag, I had an AKA chosen to maximize a person's understanding of my name without repeating it. When I first started appearing in public, I wasn't comfortable enough to repeat my name over and over until people got it.  So I chose a common name which I thought would only need to spoken once.  When it came time to change my name legally, I had been using it long enough that I had become comfortable with it.

I didn't like the combined sound of "April," and my last name, so I shortened my last name. I had joked to friends about changing my last name to "Showers," but THAT idea wasn't so very well received.

Oh, well.

Well, in my case it just feels right to change my last name as well as the first and middle names. My family thinks that I should keep my last name, but I have told them over and over that I would feel wrong if I kept it. Because that would mean that I would end up compromising on this issue and I have no intention whatsoever of doing so. It is my life after all and I have the right to do what I want. It may just take them longer to see that.

Cordone, after... the cordon tool in Half Life 1's level editor.  I stole my name from a character in a personal project I was working on, I just liked it.  Such a video game nerd.  ;D
