Title: Brain Degeneration
Post by: Garrick25 on June 20, 2008, 02:41:21 AM
Brain Disorders account for nearly one third of all chronic illnesses. It affects millions of people and not just them but also their family members, friends and colleagues. Some brain disorders, like stroke or head injury, are most commonly the result of damage to brain tissues. Other brain-related disorders are caused by progressive failure and death of nerve cells - this is known as 'neurodegeneration', and occurs in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. As we age, our brain becomes more vulnerable to many brain disorders, and may be affected by problems elsewhere in the body.

The UT Dallas center for BrainHealth is one place which integrates research, treatment, academic training about the disorders of brain.  It also provides continued follow-up to enhance and monitor functional recovery in children and adults with brain injury, brain disease and complications of normal aging.   Through this innovative approach, the center is discovering commonalities across brain problem that are yielding similarities in brain repair mechanisms and resulting in new treatments for improving life for patients with brain injuries and diseases.

The foundation has a cherished board of members which comprises of Sallie and Frederic Asche, Jr.Claudia and Dennis Berman, Toni and Norman Brinker, Dianne Cash, Theresa and David Disiere (http://www.brainhealth.utdallas.edu/about/board-mem.html), Patsy Donors, John Harbin, Matrice Ellis-Kirk, among others as its members.   The UT Dallas Institute of BrainHealth is dedicated to understanding this complex organ of human being. The mission of the institute is to understand the brain's ability to restore or protect healthy brain function, protect the brain from unnecessary mental decline and Heal the brain through treatments that regenerate brain function
