Title: 18 and Transgendered
Post by: Fuurin Kazan on June 23, 2008, 01:42:33 AM
Hi, my name is Matt and I am a MTF transsexual, however have not done anything about my situation yet. I am currently seeing a psychiatrist and he refuses to prescribe me hormones not because he thinks I shouldn't have them, but because he has no knowledge on the subject and does not want to do anything that he doesn't know about. I've talked to my school therapist as well and she has tried to help me but not much has come out of it and I really wish to start transitioning before I start college so I'm not waiting until my body starts to go into big macho man mode after I've finished growing up physically. Not to mention my father thinks I should wait until my second year in college before transitioning-great way to get destroyed when everyone says hey I remember that person from last year...he used to be a dude, haha.

So I'm looking for advice on what to do. I have a girlfriend and every time I mention it among my friends (which is pretty often because I have awesome friends who are more supportive than I could hope for), she apparently gets crushed a little inside and I don't know how to transition without hurting her. (And yes, I do prefer women...I find men generally revolting, no offense)

Is there anyone who could help me out here?

Hello, Matt,

May I suggest that you ask for a referral to a gender therapist, one who deals with gender-identity and related things?  I cannot guarantee that there is one near where you live.  Your psychologist or counselor should be able to help you.  If not, please send me a pm and we might find something working together.

It is your life and it is ok to be a lesbian.  I also prefer women and I have not had a relationship with one since I decided to not have any more relationships as a man.  Breaking up is always awkward, but the reasons are of no consequence.  There is no reason to feel that you are hurting her, because you could be breaking up for lots of other reasons too.  The sooner you confront your differences and are totally honest, the less it will hurt.  The worse thing that you can do is to prolong the inevitable and beat around the bush.  Staying together under false pretenses it tragic.  Reality is always the best medicine.
