BACKGROUND: On Sunday, The Telegraph published the final installment in its five-part series on the local transgender community.

CONCLUSION: While we know that will make some of our readers happy, we hope others came away from it with a much better understanding of the issues that transgender people face every day.

Five months ago, The Telegraph kicked off an occasional series of stories in a rather unusual way – with a front-page warning to parents and a blunt editorial.

Given the contents of our five-part "In Transition" series – which brought to the fore the plight of the transgender population in our local communities and beyond – we felt that was the appropriate thing to do.
