Of course, there's more to a setting than big bathtubs and gardens; there's acceptance and understanding. One might take this for granted at gay-owned B&Bs, but many of them tell us they have no known experience hosting transsexual or transgender guests. One proprietor refers to a transwoman as "he."
"We have to be more careful," says Dar Bassie-Cripps. She and Abidel opt for full disclosure when booking a place to stay. "I say we're a same-sex couple and Abi is a transwoman, and we want to make sure we'll feel comfortable."
