Title: what does your taste in music REALLY say about you?
Post by: Pica Pica on August 11, 2008, 05:21:11 PM
I thought it was an interesting question to answer properly.

Cos my taste in music says that I am a person who has a number of hobbyhorses that are pursued obsessively before being discarded, and that inbetween hobbyhorses I throw my net wide and shallow until I find the next one.

It reveals me as preferring novelty or originality or at least 'newness' in my taste.

My taste is for silence. Most music gives me a headache.

:D Then you would hate what I listen to. Some people have told me through the years that I am an angry person because of my musical tastes, but that is not true. Anyways....what my musical tastes say about me is that I like a lot of different things and that I am open-minded. I can get into anything from Napalm Death to John Mayer to John Coltrane to Merzbow. It's all dependent on my mood. Does that answer the question??  :D

I am a hopeless romantic.  I love 'Love Songs'.  Or course I am also getting into chic flix too.

Yeah, in my opinion the music you listen to says a lot about your personality.

But, not so much the music you listen to at specific time but more like the collection or the different varieties of music you listen to.

I have so much variety in my collection its ridiculous, everything to cover depression to happy times. From pop to heavy metal, from classic to acid rock, from psychedelic trance to acid jazz, punk to tribal.

For me my music is a good description of how cultured I am and to what extent I am willing to accept variety in my life. I am free spirit :)

I think your taste also reflects your intellectual traits to some extent. If you can stand certain kinds of "hardcore" rap you probably arent paying close enough attention to the lyrics. The same goes for every type of music that actually has lyrics.

Guess you're not paying attention to rap then.  Sure there is the Gansta Rap stuff, but that's not all of it by a long shot, and most of the early masterpieces like The Message or Rappers Delight are wonderful.  As is most of the Beastie Boys stuff.  Which is pretty hard-core hip-hop.

My music says that I like to daydream, and I also like to dance.

I listen to practically nothing but techno and trance.  So, yeah   :D

Thats why a said "certain kinds." I like rap, its just some stuff especially newer stuff, thats completely ridiculous. I dont understand how they ever make it mainstream.

I dont understand how they ever make it mainstream.

Every generation finds a way to create music that the old people will hate.  For my time it was Led Zep.

But I work with a lot of the hip-hop groups, and I like a lot of the stuff, pretty vanilla taste I'm sure, but hey, I'm white, over fifty with a PhD, so its almost amazing I like any of it.  But the Roots, Lyrics Born, Jurassic 5, is good.  Kanye West is nothing but amazing, and some of the stuff that R Kelly does is very funny if nothing else.

But to each their own, I'm more of a fan of cool jazz and modern string quartet and trio stuff myself.

My taste in music says I am eclectic. Good music is simply good and artful -- regardless of genre. For instance, I value Public Enemy and Mark Knofler, The Clash, Nina Simone, Tom Waits and Bach Fugues all on about the same scale.

Well the real stars, people like Dolly, or Willie or even Kanye can make you listen and like it even when you don't like the genre.

I m only 21 so im not completely old yet.

But theres more to what I mean about rap. I mean just listen to must of the idiots who have nothing better to talk about than how much money they make from drugs and pimping(!) women.

I hate these guys. Who the <bleep> do they think they are?

But in the end, they manage to overlay there crappy lyrics onto catchy tunes that people like to dance to. So in the end its not really about pissing off old people its about putting ignorant <bleep> on top of good beats to keep people numb.

Gosh I could say that about most of the bands I work with.  A bad haircut and a gimmick and that's it.  I love it, and laugh my ass off, when some kid walks in with a boatload of guitars, when all the good players I've ever watched have like two or three.  Of course, they can retune them onstage, so...  Old Jerry used to tour with one guitar and his tech had to sleep with it to make sure nothing happened to it.  Or Carlos and his custom Ibanez, (and little Fender amp) but if Ibanez is making custom guitars just for you, well how many do you need?

I'm real fond of the big metal acts with the wall of amps.  You know what?  Most of them are fakes.  They have a light that goes on, but they are not on. Its a pose.  Just like the huge guitar collection often is.

Matter of fact we have a saying at the Warfield "if you can't bring talent, bring production" so that the bands that have a all the lights, all the staging, all the props are covering for the fact that they can't really play for crap.

And I'll give that much to the rappers, they don't do all that production stuff, they do try to perform.  And they are saying something in many cases beyond "Oh baby, I really want to get into your pants" or "Oh baby I'm so sad because you won't let me get into your pants anymore."

A lot of my favorite music is hundreds of years old. I also like lots of songs recorded in the 1920s and 30s. I think I was born late.

I hope the best music I've ever heard has not even been made yet, except for John Coltrane, that's gonna be hard to top.

Hey all.
I think my music tells right off what mood I'm in.  Dance music (techno/house/dance/pop/disco/etc.ec.) and you know I'm feeling pretty and I'm a happy camper with lots of energy.  And I'm probably cleaning house.  70's Country means I'm kinda low.  Mississippi Delta Blues and you know things are bad.  Enigma or Enya and I'm isolating.  Tracy Chapman or pretty much any female folksy bluesy vocalist and I'm feeling the Anger of Injustice and want to throw wooden shoes at The Machine....
the song Bubbly though.  That's just me being me.

My taste in music says that my moods fluctuate erratically...

I listen to lots of different things, depending on my mood and the situation.

My taste in music says absolutely nothing about me.
I am not defined by sound. :icon_blink:
