Title: Electrolysis Problems
Post by: pamshaw on August 12, 2008, 10:39:54 AM
I have had some recent problems with electrolysis. I thought things were going well but recently I had some serious skin reactions.
Unfortunately I failed to accept my female self until later in life so my beard is tough and gray. I am taking hormones and everything else is going well and, except for my beard, I am already quite passable being 5'7" tall with small bones. Has there been any progress with laser treatment of gray hair? I am afraid the beard is really going to be a problem because if I don't remove it if completely I will be continually reminded of natures mistake as I hate everything male. Any advice would be helpful.

Pam,
Laser does not work on grey hair because the hair would absorb the light wave.  So you are pretty much stick with electrolysis.  I am having laser done on the darker hair for now.  I am going to wait to do the grey hair, I want to see how things look after the darker is gone.  My friend Peg, a bio-woman, has a slight grey bread on her chin and she shaves it as necessary.

Welcome to the club! I'm 58 and undergoing regular 4 hour electrolysis sessions. Yes, it is painful, yes, it's expensive, and yes, it has to be done. It's just part of transitioning. I'm having electrolysis for facial hair and eyebrows. Everything else I shave.

When I have an area cleared, the dormant hair that will grow in is usually white, which does not respond to laser any more than gray hair does.  You may wish to speak to a dermatologist concerning your problems with electrolysis, since laser will not help you with gray or white hair. Electrolysis is your only real option.
