After getting a new letter from my doctor, Phil at OutFront tells me that the Dept of Public Safety has agreed to grant my variance.  I should be getting the letter soon.

My letter arrived today so I will be able to get my female drivers license at the same time as i change my address.

Tuesday I took my letter in hand and went down to get my new lisence. I filled out the form with my new address and checked the female box. So I get called up to the counter, the clerk goes through the form, doesn't bat an eye at the F box.  She isn't even looking at the variance letter, so I point it out to her.  She looks puzzled and says, "But you look so much like an American!"  I tell her it's not because I'm an immigrant; it's for changing my gender, and she says, "Good for you," but clearly she isn't getting it.  I hope it doesn't get screwed up in processing.

Thank you for sharing that! I practically rolled on the floor when I read it. That's so typical of a bureaucrat! (Apologies in advance to any forum members who are bureaucrats; I'm sure you're the good kind.)

If an author wrote that in a story, the editor would blue-pencil it as being too contrived.

Anyway, congratulations! I bet her obvious acceptance of you as a woman made your day.

Honestly? It was more exasperating than anything. Acceptance as a woman is just the norm for my life, as long as I'm not talking on the phone. I don't think about it anymore. The people I really want to throttle are the Qwest call center people who ignore the fact that my name is Elisabeth and continue to call me "Mr."

And today my driver's license with an "F" on it arrived.

That's very cool, Lisbeth! I'll never forget taking my letter into the mva.  The young lady I gave it to chatted and smiled, talked about the weather etc.  Then....

She read the letter.
She read it again.
Then looked at me slowly over the top edge of the letter.

"Am I your first transsexual honey?", I asked.  I leaned closer and smiled.

"I've been waiting for this to happen for a long time!", she said.  "I knew it would, but....."

"Well", I said, "Have I met your expectations?", I asked her.

"I thought you would be really...... big......and hairy......." "But you're just like anyone else!"

"That",  I said, "is because I am".

She smiled, relaxed, and finished my paperwork, then instructed me to go to an area to have my photo taken.  The lady who did my picture and laminated my new license was unaware of the letter, apparently, and we just talked about our grandchildren........just like anyone else.

Bev
