I'd say there's never too many. Didn't the Irish use to completely live on them? Other peoples at other times had a mainly potatoe diet as well.

Well... I'm an Irish one, yes, but the tolerance level of the potato if that exists...

Well...

Basically Spironolactone is a potassium sparer. It makes your system build it up instead of excreting it from what I hear and you lose sodium faster.

I just don't wanna get some bad system failure from too much potassium in Potatoes, yet its the best thing to gain weight with I know..

Spiro is a potassium-sparing diuretic, as in you keep what you have.
And about sodium, peeing allot might have something to do with it...

I live in Idaho, we have an abundace of potatoes and I know families who eat them with dinner every night.  Haven't ever heard of people ODing on potatoes.

The daily recommended intake of potassium a day is 3,500 mg's (says this website I just looked at  ;D), any more than that and you do risk  stomach upsets, intestinal problems or heart rhythm disorders.

So what's that, like 7 potatoes a day?  I think you'll be fine.

Ah, but that's under normal circumstances, when you're excreting potassium at the standard rate.  With the spiro... I guess you'd need to look up details on the drug.

Thats true, guess I didn't think about that, but I really don't think Deviousxen is just going to sit around eating potatoes...   There are plenty of other foods that have higher Potassium levels also, like Lima beans which have approx. 980 mg's per serving.

But I'm a little lost, is she trying to gain weight?  I'm sure if that's the case there are plenty of foods out there that arn't high in potassium but that have more calories and fats in them.

Xen,

From one Irish Lass to another.  When you're Irish there is no such thing as too many potatoes.

But if you are asking because of a health problem, you should ask your primary care.  There might be something about the potassium that you need to watch.

I'm allergic to wheat and eggs and have "sensitivities" to everything. Basically means I get hives in my throat sometimes for no apparent reason.

Potatoes don't do that. They are a good way to gain weight.

What I'm curious about is if I should watch my potassium intake from eating massive amounts of potato chips. I'm trying to gain weight. I'm trying to gain a TON of weight. I take spironolactone.

What should I be conservative about????

Yeah, you don't want to eat spuds until your heart stops - death by potato chip.  You should definitely watch the potassium intake, maybe look for info on how cardiac patients or other people taking spiro are supposed to eat.  If possible, have your doc check potassium levels.

Here lies Xen - she could never have just one.

Doesn't it depend how large they are?

those little ones are always the best cos you can do them in salads and are more snacky!!
I'm part Irish too y'know  ^-^
should probably eat more of those things, I can't get above 9 stone!
Most I ate was the equivalent of 4 quite largish meals a day for about 3/4 months, and then I didn't get much above 9 anyway!!
:'( ;D
