A national media frenzy ensued after a Spring Arbor University
professor was fired because he became a she.

Since then Julie Nemecek, formerly John Nemecek, has been advocating
for tolerance and understanding and regularly speaking about what it
means to be a transgender person in the United States.

"I don't think I'm a mistake," the 57-year-old said.

A lot of transfolk say they're not a mistake. And we, as people, are not mistakes.

I do, however, believe a mistake was made when I was born with female genitalia. I'm a boy. There was some sort of mix up.

I'm still having trouble figuring this out: "Denial among transgender individuals is rampant, and the suicide rate is estimated to be 20 times higher than for heterosexuals, she said."

So all transgender folks are nonhetero?

Meh. That was either a misuse of the word heterosexual or that might be how they actually classify it.

The author probably meant cisgender individuals.
