The only way you know what homophobia really means, is to be gay" a law-school classmate once told me. He had just been publicly put down in a constitutional law class for asking about gay rights, where the professor had just discussed the equality clause of the Constitution, which guarantees "equal protection of the laws" to all citizens. For reasons he didn't disclose, the professor felt gay people didn't deserve this protection.  For a while we wondered why. Blind bigotry aside, we like to imagine we're rational thinking beings, and there had to be a reason, even if those reasons barely mask prejudice. We got the 'reasons' from different places.
