"I Am My Own Wife" explores the real life of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a ->-bleeped-<- who managed to survive in Germany under Nazi and communist rule. Born Lothar Berfelde, he barely escaped being killed by a Nazi firing squad as a teenager during World War II. Changing his identity to Charlotte, she subsisted in East Germany for the length of the communist regime before dying of a heart attack in 2002.
