Title: Help Me Find A Name
Post by: Jenni on September 15, 2008, 02:28:33 AM
Ok, here's the deal. In about a month and a half I will be changing my name. The process is going to be fairly easy. The Problem is picking my name. Of course my first name is going to be Jennifer. It's a name that I always wanted since I was a little kid. However past the first name I've drawn a blank. I do want to change my last name but I think I can handle that. It's my middle name that the problem. I have no idea what it should be. So I thought it would be interesting and neat to put myself to the mercies of my fellow online peeps to give me a middle name. I'm going to be taking suggestions from everyone here and this other board I post on as well as my youtube channel. I'm not sure how I'll chose the winner , but probably by either what sounds good to me or more than likely in the event of multiple suggestions of the same name, I'll chose that one. So anyone who has a good idea what my middle name should be, please, tell me. You never know, your suggestion could be the winner and then it will part of my new legal name. You know what? Smut it, winner gets a marvel or DC title subsciption of your choice for a year.I'll pay for it out of my own pockets.

Oh and please no porn sounding names

What kind of person are you? What are your defining characteristics?

Yeah this sounds kind of serious. We need to know more about you first.

You can't go wrong with Marie.
Marie is the all-purpose middle name. Sounds nice with everything. Jennifer Marie-- I like it.
Whatever you do, it must not alliterate with your first name.

*ties to pawn off his middle name*  How about Faye?

You could always try to feminize your birth given middle name, which is pretty much all I'm doing.  I'm more attatched to my middle name however for personal reasons, so I might be a different case than you.

The first thing that popped into my head was Jennifer Louise.

You could go without a middle name. I'm thinking of not having a middle name.

I think traditionaly they are often family names. Do you have a grandparent, aunty, uncle, parent, or cousin that you like? You could take their name as a mark of respect.

How about Alexandra. Coupled with Jennifer it sounds like a very solid name, Jennifer Alexandra.

Could go for another J to make you JJ - like Joanna, Jane, Juliet, or Jasmine (oh pretty! ;))...

Ann sounds nice. Jennifer Ann has a good ring to it.

Personal preference would be Ann or Anne.  or even Lynn.

Or how close are you to your mother?  Maybe her first name or middle name are tribute.

Janet

Hmm, I'm thinking that a one-syllable middle name might sound nice. Maybe something with an "a," "o," or "u" in it to contrast with the "e" and "i" sounds in Jennifer. Kate? No, that's short for Katherine. But it sure sounds nice. How about Gail? Sean? Janet's suggestions are good, too, Anne or Lynn.

Uh. Perhaps two syllables? Ellen. Allie. Megan. Caitlin. Christine.

Sorry, my brain is not working today.

Well, I'd suggest finding one yourself, since it's kind of difficult for other people to find a name that's right for you. Have a look around on name sites, like Behind the Name and baby name sites.

Some suggestions are Lauren, Kimberly, Dawn, Faye, Clarice, Leah, Leanne, Isabel, Adele, Alicia, Alison, Melanie...

At least in my family, the middle name generally signified the family lineage. So in my case it would be either my mother's , grandmother's, or great grandmother's, first name based on the order of my siblings. When I changed my name I broke with tradition and dropped the middle name entirely. I always found the middle name fairly cumbersome, as I never used it except on legal documents. The "signing" lines on those documents always seem to be short and since I have a fairly long last name, I decided to forgo the middle name. I do get people occasionally saying though.....you forgot your middle name, on this form/document.  Then they always give me this look like I'm lying when I respond "I don't have a middle name".

I used the same initial as my birth middle name. I liked my original first name, it's unique, but absolutely despised my middle name. The middle name I use now was also the name of an ancestor who I never met, I found it in a family geneology history. I liked her story and picture.

I can't really choose your name but here are some things to think about...

What would your parents have named you if you were the opposite sex?
Do you want to keep your initials?
Do you want your new name to sound like your old name?
Baby name sites are very helpful for suggestions.  You can choose a meaning then select a name from the meaning.
Be careful of stripper names.  They sound good at first but don't wear well.
Ask your friends and family.  They know you best.

I finally chose my name from a song that gave me inspiration.  It reminds me that I can do anything I set out to do. It also has the same initial.

I hated my original middle name drastically, and refused to ever use it or even acknowledge that I had one. When I changed my name legally, I took a new feminine middle name, Victoria, derived from the same Latin root as my original middle name. Coincidentally, it was the name of the two women friends of mine who were the most influential in my transition--it's the middle name of one woman and the first name of the other, and I wanted to commemorate their significance to me. What's more, it has a positive meaning for my success in transition, which is truly a major personal victory, and historical resonance since I like Victorian Goth fashions. Now I am happy to use my middle name, one I can enjoy and be proud of.

How about the name of a grandma or aunt that you're especially close with?
They may be touched, and you'll get to keep someone you love in your name forever.
