I think it's fair to say that I discovered Iceland through karaoke. In my first week at film school I met a fellow who I thought was called Happy and who hailed, he informed me from Iceland.

I eventually learned that his name was not in fact Happy, (but something very close) and above all, during the course of a friendship that brought me to his lovely island, introduced me to my future wife and planted unexpected roots for me, I discovered the joys of bawling my lungs out to such classics as "Jolene," "Hello" and "Don't Stop Me Now."

The place of choice in New York was a now-much-changed dive of a joint known as Lucky Cheng's. No ordinary dive bar, this place was the mecca of ->-bleeped-<-s of every shape and hue.
