Title: the man bag
Post by: JonasCarminis on September 16, 2008, 02:11:45 PM
"its not a purse, its a man bag!"

does it hold up?  ive been seriously considering geting one just because they look cool and i like to carry crap.  im a little worried that it will be seen as more than a gay mans purse... and be seen as a regular one!  i dont mind lookng gay.  infact, i think its fun.  but i DO NOT want to be seen as a girl.  would a man bag hurt my image?

What kind of man bag?

I have a soft-sided briefcase I take to work.  When I'm out and about I normally don't carry anything.  What about a back pack?

Get one like this.  This is what I use at school or if I just have crap to carry.

I have one that's similar from AE, but it doesn't scream "I'm from American Eagle!" haha

That looks cool, Brady!  I hate carrying things when I'm out, though.  The first thing I did after deciding to transition was ditch the purse and buy a wallet.  That simple act was so very freeing, I don't know why I didn't think of it decades ago!!  No law says a woman can't have a wallet in her back pocket, right??

Then again, I don't really 'go out' anywhere.  I lead a dull life.  Sigh.

It all depends how you wear it.

If you wear it on your shoulder, it'll look like a purse.

If you wear it around your neck and under one arm, you'll be cool.

If you wear it around your neck, under one arm and rest the bag on your side/back, you'll be cooler.

If you wear it around your neck, under one arm and rest the bag on your stomach you'll look like every gay man in the Castro.

LOL  i'll be number 4 thanks.  ive always carried a wallet jay, i never really gave it much thought.  but now i have my car and house keys, phone, wallet, id like to carry a notebook since im in need of one, i have a laptop...

so it just seems practical to have a small bag to carry crap in.  plus im tired of piling everything into one pocket and having only my phone in the other because im afraid to scratch it. (iphone)

Clearly your cargo pants are too tight if you can't fit a laptop in one pocket and a six pack of beer in another ;)

Deep pockets FTW! :D I don't like carrying things around, but if I must, messenger bag is the way to go. Oh and worn in position #3, always haha.

I admit to being dumb, what's the difference between 2 and 3?

Chet,

That bag is cute--almost steampunk, yay! But it will look like a purse on a ciswoman and a manbag on a cisman.

Catch the drift?

OMG this is soooo true! I've just recently been able to find cargo's in jean material in my neck of the woods and I love them to death. Best part is I work on towers (like the tripod or square type at people's homes for TV antennas) and have to wear a tool belt with a safety belt/scare strap making my normal pants pockets useless to me. With cargo pants I can keep extra parts and stuff on me while I'm wearing my different belts for work.

But the messenger pack works well for riding my bike or taking a bus rid somewhere.

Dude, when I was still dressing like a "girl" I used to carry messenger bags all the time because I REFUSED to wear a purse.

In fact it was this one I used to carry around:
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.hottopic.com%2Fis%2Fimage%2FHotTopic%2F156297_hi%3Fwid%3D199&hash=d1d2891815b9d302f4e300f31d41f78ea5a5c866)

One of my friends would still make fun of me and call it a purse :(

So to the man purse I say:  NEVAR!!!! Pockets 4 life!

This is getting a little off-topic, guys. Can we drag it back to the subject of bags in general and the merits/pitfalls thereof?

I have a manbag or mag lol and I love it.  Mines just plain black leather I bought it from Primark of all places it was only £6 or $12 for all you american guys out there.  It's a messenger style, not too big not too small, just average size, looks smart, is useful and handy and I can fit everything I need to take out with me in it, I don't think they look girly at all as long as you buy from a guy range and carry it right as a previous poster pointed out.
I also have a backpack which I also like but I don't always want to carry a backpack around as I live in London and I think it can look a bit touristy, I also find it spoils the look of some of my clothes especially when I'm not dressing in more formal stuff.

FOUND ONE!!!  thought id dredge this back up.   finally found a good one and bought it.  i'll get a pic of it on me for size comparison tomorrow when im wearing real clothes. (no im not wearing fake ones.  har har)  its smaller than a messenger bag.
