This campaign is just approaching the end of the very beginning, a
Presentation Bill to be drafted by Simon Hughes MP is only the start
of a massive effort that could take years to achieve very much at all.
There are many hurdles to negotiate and I have been advised there is
little chance that proposed legislation effectively granting legal and
social recognition to identities outside the societal gender system
will get through all those hurdles and become an Act of Parliament at
the first attempt.
Yeah, that is going to be a task that even Hercules would probably go weak at the knees with. I don't really forsee anything happening at all with this until at least the next parliament... especially with the current political climate.
Gordon Brown is pretty much focused on things that are going to make him popular again, in light of mutterings about a leadership challenge and possibly a new PM. No one likes him. And David Cameron is too busy trying to be Mr Nice Guy... which leaves the Lib Dems, who might as well be farting into a hurricane for the amount of attention they get. So I don't think this is going to be a major issue on anyone's political radar for the forseeable future.
Beware the dreaded "Lack of parliamentary time".
