In a first, a GLBT publication interviewed a Republican candidate for President: John McCain responded to a series of written questions submitted to him by the Washington Blade.

The questions, and the Republican nominee's responses, touched on topics from McCain's friendship with gay former Congressman Jim Kolbe and the question of marriage equality, to the discriminatory policies against gays still in place in institutions such as the American military and the Boy Scouts.

Though McCain had drawn some media criticism (including an EDGE article) for not having acknowledged Kolbe's friendship during the Republican National Convention, even as Kolbe was present at the convention and stumping for McCain, the Ariz. senator and Republican nominee for President acknowledged Kolbe in the interview with an effusive reply to the Blade's query asking about McCain's experiences and friendships with gays, and how they had informed the nominee's views on issues important to GLBT Americans.
