Earlier this month, I attended an extraordinary workshop and orientation by youth advocacy organization Transactive, where I learned how to stand up for children who do not conform to Dick and Jane stereotypes. Queer theorists and on-the-ground advocates have long realized that homophobia and anti-gay sentiment have much more to do with gender expression and deviation from gender norms than what anyone does in their bedrooms, but have struggled for effective and non-controversial ways to engage children and their families. Transactive has forged ahead for the sake of the kids they serve.
