Title: what mtf uses a gynecologist for hrt?
Post by: mickie88 on October 06, 2008, 11:14:10 PM
my family doc tried referring me to some endos in town, but none of them know anything about TS issues, so she recommended an OB, different from my wife's but in the same office.

my questions are, i'm not sure how to set up an appointment, if he does do it. i feel they may ask too many question's(receptionists) if they do do it.

what do i say the appointment is for since i've never seen an OB except when i go with my wife?

anyone can pm(ftm) me and tell me what a normal visit to the OB costs? they've taken my insurance away so i really need to know!!

thx,

Why don't you just call them and state your needs and your wants?

Mickie:

Lots of GG's go to the doctor for HRT.  It's really quite normal.  If they ask, you tell them you want to see them about hormone replacement.  Really the receptionist doesn't really care, they just want to give the doctor an idea what you are going to need.

Once you get into the office, though, I would recommend that you are truthful with the nurse on the exact nature of your visit.  Again, they need to know what you are seeing the doctor for and can prepare them for what you may ask.  Don't worry about the nurse blabbing or anything.  Not only have the probably heard it all before, but also they are bound by the same HIPPA laws that the doctor is bound to.  They cannot say anything that would violate patient privacy.

As for cost, usually, a specialist costs more to see than a GP.  Sometimes two or three times as high.  You can also discuss fees with the receptionist when you make the appointment and try to work out a payment schedule.

Usually they want some amount upfront and then they will bill you for the rest.

I am from one country that is in the Europe. Our system uses gynecologists to describe and oversee HRT. Gender clinic writes a recomendation to them.

Hi Mickie,

I currently am seeing an OB/GYN who is overseeing my HRT. I was actually referred to her by another TS in my local area. When I called to make the appointment, I specifically asked if they worked with Transsexual People. The response was enthusiatically "Yes!". That's all I needed! I made the appointment and brought in my latest CBC blood test with me from my GP. I was prescribed HRT on my first visit. I happen to have an issue with BPH (enlarged prostate) and hypogonadism. She was able to code to that for billing of insurance. She bills out at $96.00 per office visit. Luckily, I only have to pay $30.00 of it. It's been almost six month's now and I am very comfortable with the way she handles everything.

My original HRT doctor practiced gynecology practiced at a women's clinic that served primarily lesbians and transsexuals, M to F and F to M,  He is himself a trans-man.  To simplify billing and charting I switched to my primary care MD who is an internist.

Powerful as it is, HRT isn't rocket science.  It's just a matter of finding the proper dosage and types of estrogen and androgen inhibitor then following up every six months on levels, especially prolactin.  Any MD that wants to take the trouble to research it can do it.
