I came out to myself when I was 17.
The rest of the world had to wait a couple more years.
I vividly recall the first time I told someone I was a lesbian. I was 19. Choked with emotion and scared out of my mind, I haltingly told a woman I was in love with her.
She knew — but she wanted to hear it from me first. It was both excruciating and liberating.
Months later, during a visit home from college, I came out to my parents.
While the first time is the hardest, coming out to my parents was nerve-wracking. I sat them down on the couch for "the talk," and they listened as I came out about my sexual orientation.
