Title: Sanctuary
Post by: Sarah Dreams on October 11, 2008, 09:24:23 PM
has anyone seen the new Sci-fi channel's show Sanctuary? Wow!

QuoteSanctuary blazes a trail across the TV landscape with never-before-seen production technology. Starring Amanda Tapping, best known to fans as the brilliant Col. Samantha Carter on Stargate SG-1, Sanctuary is the first series to shoot extensively on green screen, using virtual sets and extraordinary visual effects.

Sanctuary follows the adventures of the beautiful, enigmatic and always surprising Dr. Helen Magnus (Tapping), a brilliant scientist who holds the secrets of a clandestine population — a group of strange and sometimes terrifying beings that hide among humans.

Along with her new recruit, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne), her quirky tech wiz Henry (Ryan Robbins) and her fearless daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup), Magnus seeks to protect this threatened phenomena as well as unlock the mysteries behind their existence. The series also stars Christopher Heyerdahl as the sinister John Druitt.

Created by Damian Kindler (Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis), Sanctuary is produced in association with SCI FI Channel and is distributed by Tricon Films and Television. The show is executive produced by Damian Kindler, Sam Egan, Amanda Tapping, Martin Wood, Keith Beedie and N. John Smith.

I just want to be Amanda Tapping. She's my hero!

I've seen it, but I wasn't impressed.  She analyzed Jack the Ripper and fell in love with him thinking he was cured?

The interaction between actors seems a little jerky.

I'm thinking they need time to pull it together, or they'll never pull it together (enough for my taste)

don't kill me. you asked.

According to wikipedia, the original version released online makes it more clear that she analyzed him for his teleport ability and they fell in love at that time.  Then a side effect of his ability is that every time he teleports it makes him more twisted and evil.  So he became the ripper later.  I don't think it came across in the TV series.

I don't think the writing is up to the standards of Stargate.  The characters are also all really serious.  The little humor inserted here and there is almost all situational.  The Stargates were better for being a comedy of manners in combination with a great adventurte story and a cohesive main storyline driven by a recurring villain or set of villains.  That is not the case with Sanctuary.  It wasn't really the case with Farscape either.  They had the comedy of manners, but it was a lower comedy with less believable characters.  And it lacked the main storyline for the most part.  Stargate stands head and shoulders above these others.  Doctor Who is similar in the elements that make it successful.

Oh, heck. I was meaning to watch this to see if it was any good. Guess I'll have to hunt up a rerun or see if it's online.

online at scifi.com

Stargate is good but since they have so many "filler" episodes Doctor Who is way better.

I'm enfatuated with Rose Tyler  ;D

Doctor Who, Stargate, and Star trek all have the mobile set going for them.  They can just pop in to a new setting each episode.  I think Dr. Who is so good now because they have had 40 years to get it right.  They have a huge selection of excellent recurring villains, and they've found the wacky, brilliant, mysterious Doctor and strong female sidekick archetypes that really appeal to the audience.  It's hard to beat.
