October is Gay History Month. Last week, we observed what organizers
hoped would become one of our community's most celebrated holidays,
National Coming Out Day, on Oct. 11.
A day later, by the cruelest of coincidences, was the tenth
anniversary of one of our most well-known tragedies: the Oct. 12,
1998, death of gay Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard.
Brutally beaten by two thugs who lured him from a bar, Shepard was
left tied to a desolate fence post in Laramie, Wyo. Found hours later,
on Oct. 7, by a biker who initially thought the limp body was a
scarecrow, Shepard lingered in a coma for almost a week in a hospital
in Fort Collins, Colo.
