The election isn't closer than you think. Barack Obama must keep up his momentum, but he has a clear lead. John McCain's only hope is that Obama's support falls apart.

A disaster is unlikely. Obama is now and perhaps has always been the establishment's choice. He is determined to keep well-informed, mainstream voters, especially Republicans, on his side.

In this respect, Colin Powell's endorsement is significant. He enjoys the respect of the political center and of Americans generally. Another recent endorsement also sent a reassuring message to political and financial elites. Christopher Buckley, the son of the iconic conservative thinker and writer, is a political satirist whose humorous novels delight the skeptical and intellectual.
