This is my review of Miss Saigon (http://www.roxyregionaltheatre.org/nowplaying/index.html).
My first suggestion make your reservations well in advance if you want a
chance to see this masterpiece. They will more than likely sell out
frequently.
The atmosphere starts enveloping you the moment when you step into the
theater. Soldiers were lounging on stage and doing some of the things idle
young men might.
The sets were outstanding in both design and visual appeal. Everything from
the corrugated tin pieces, the curtain made of money, the chain link fences,
to the colored oriental lights above. The haze gave weight to air giving an
impression of the hot steamy atmosphere one would expect for Saigon with
it's mystery and spice.
The costumes gave depth to the story and presents a vision of Saigon that
many American soldiers from that era might well recall.
Well played music is capable of steering human emotions as the music tonight
clearly showed. Emotions in the audience during the performance ran the
gamut from humor to grief with some even moved to tears at some points.
The acting sizzled from the romantic heat between Kim and Chris, the sparks
that flew between Ellen and Kim, The funny engineer, the intensity of John
as he preaches about those who were left behind, the scorned lover Thuy, and
not the least being the lovable child Tam. The rest of the company which
include several Roxy regulars flesh out the story nicely.
In my opinion this memorable show which runs 2 hours and 20 minutes with one
intermission of 15 minutes was definitely worth the time and the admission
fee. I intend to see it several more times including the dinner show on July
16th.
I think that it's been almost 10 years since I saw Miss Saigon, when it was playing in Toronto. I have to agree it is a show worth seeing. It brought back many memories of the periode that I was serving in Cambodia and Vietnam myself. I still listen to the sound track and it still gives me goose bumps. If it ever plays near me again I'll definitly see it. I agree Susan, a great show, and a memorable experience.
