Beyond being an impressive piece of storytelling, Gus Van Sant's Milk is an important film because it dramatizes the life of the one of the most underappreciated political figures of the 1970s.

Harvey Milk was the first openly gay man elected to political office in America, breaking what seemed like an insurmountable barrier.

"Harvey's contribution in the gay movement was enormous," said Vancouver's Tim Stevenson, who holds the dual honour of being Canada's first openly gay provincial cabinet minister and an ordained minister.
