Title: The Best Places for a TS?
Post by: Mina_Frostfall on December 05, 2008, 08:05:27 PM
I was wondering, what are the best places in the world for a TS person to live? Are there any particular countries or cities that are particularly tolerant? What cities have to best access to resources for our community?

In the UK I'm a big fan of Leeds and Brighton. I can be myself in those places completely, I love them both. They have big GLBT communities

New York City seems to be a pretty good place for a TS.

I've been told, but have not confirmed this personally, that Indianapolis is very T* friendly. Perhaps someone from Indianapolis or a surrounding area can confirm this.

Blessings,
Angela

Absolutely!

We even have laws in place that prevent an employer for discriminating against GLBTG. Indiana University from what I hear is also more progressive then most schools.

My gosh, I live in Indiana and am thinking of moving to the Indy area and haven't heard about friendly anti-discrimination laws.  Can you help point me somewhere to read about them?

Best access to resources has got to be the Bay Area followed by New York, Vancouver, and Seattle.  Though I've heard nice things about Indy too.  However I've been through Indy, so that was never an option for me.  Big cities, and places with large very liberal colleges (Madison, Ann Arbor) tend to be better.

Still looking for something that says more then "Indianapolis has anti gender identity discrimination laws". I do know that any state job anywhere in Indiana is prohibited for discriminating but I will keep looking for the article I saw about Indianapolis.

Well ... I didn't find the one specifically for Indianapolis but I did find the one for Bloomington. If I can land a good job there I will strongly consider moving.

Well, I'm glad to see some of Indiana is more progressive.  My therapist is in Bloomington and that was another area I've been thinking of moving to, would be closer to my doctor in Indy as well.

Oh ya, I forgot that's where I'm from...

I don't get the idea of picking a city friendly to transsexuals.  I would want to live in a city that's friendly to WOMEN, because that's what I'm living as.
And I'm sorry people up north just don't hold doors open for me LOL.

Lol, in Canada we open doors for everyone regardless of gender.

I would consider that 'north'.

I live in downtown Vancouver, BC. It is AWESOME here. Seriously, I work as female and go everywhere. I've never been hassled here, not even once!

The Twin Cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul are very good, but I don't know if they're the absolute best.  We do have a large TS and TV population, a lot of social services and accepting churches(MCC AND UCC, as well as some mainline denominations), and even a TS music group (Rock Band?) or two.  They sometimes play in straight bars, and in some bohemian places.

An online guide to accepting churches is based here, and they have also have nationwide, even some international recommendations. They have forums, Blog links, and denominational support groups like Dignity and others have links.  It's a small web LGBT news service sometimes.  They are the religious arm of the NGLTF.

http://www.welcomingresources.org/ (http://www.welcomingresources.org/)    Just click on "Find a Church" on the taskbar on the top.

The Story of My Home Church:

We have two, sometimes three couples where the woman is still dating her once boyfriend/now trans woman companion.

An active state organization:  http://www.outfront.org/ (http://www.outfront.org/)

A very good, and broad bar scene.   An active P-FLAG.

A hotel downtown, sometimes known as "->-bleeped-<- Towers"  And a neighbothood South of church called Dyke Heights.

The Universitie's PHS, Program in Human Sexuality is far less uptight than in the Bad Old Days.

We had over a hundred people at this past Trans Day of Rememberance

Jack Baker was U.of M student body president 20 years ago.  (He tried for homecoming queen, but didn't quite make it)  He and his partner, Mike McConnell, both lawyers, are still fighting for gay or non gender specific marriage, in Washington D.C., even now.

That's great! I was considering going to Canada for college either this year or next year. I don't think my financial aid would apply in Canada, though.  ???

As for cities...I can't say for a fact Chicago is good, I'v never been...but DON'T come to the MidWest, or the South...it's NOT kosher!  >:(

I'll second the Twin Cities.  Minneapolis was actually the first city in the U.S. to pass anti-discrimination laws that included trans-people specifically.

Well, I would have to say Atlanta Ga. is a very TS friendly area. There are lots of us here. I live my life as a female every day. No problems here. I can go into stores to  use the restroom and the attendants unlock the ladies restrooms for me. Some stores keep the restrooms locked til you ask for them. And yes guys open the doors for me all the time. Businesses and the whole downtown area seem to be great.

Portland, Oregon is very Transfriendly.  And Oregon has laws protecting the gender identity community.

There's also two other municipalities in the state of Indiana besides Indy and Bloomington. They are Lafayette and Fort Wayne.

The way I see it. Indiana's transgender capital is Bloomington. The US' capital is San Fransisco.
