Family affair

Last night, I was struck by one of the comments on Jenny Boylan's post in the Trans Group Blog. She had written about the fact that some of her colleagues at the college where she works still slip and use male pronouns. She said she knows they aren't doing it deliberately, but it still hurts her, and she feels like she bears the burden while they pass it off.

Most of the comments were sympathetic. The one I saw last night took Jenny to task for whining when so much in her life is very good, compared to some of our sisters who have very difficult lives. The commenter suggested that if Jenny really hated hearing male pronouns, she should move away from where she has lived and worked for decades and start again somewhere new.

I agree with sentiment expressed by several commentators: if you can't whine on your blog, where can you do it?  Yes, Ms. Boylan has a life with many privileges, but that doesn't mean she can't feel pain.  And it doesn't mean she isn't allowed to reach out to others to share it.
