Former Madison alderman broke ground for gay rights in Wisconsin

The critically acclaimed movie "Milk" opens at Madison's Sundance Cinema Friday. It stars Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, a gay activist elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors in late 1977, a time when the number of openly gay, elected public officials in America could be counted on one hand:

• Kathy Kozachenko (Ann Arbor, Mich., city council, 1972)

• Elaine Noble (Massachusetts House of Representatives, 1974)

• Allan Spear (Minnesota Senate, 1976)

• And Jim Yeadon — Madison City Council, April 1977.
