Title: I may have found an anwser - The Trickster
Post by: RebeccaFog on December 31, 2008, 11:49:32 PM
QuoteTrickster
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In mythology, and in the study of folklore and religion, a trickster is a god, goddess, spirit, man, woman, or anthropomorphic animal who plays tricks or otherwise disobeys normal rules and norms of behavior.

While doing something inexplicable, I stumbled upon this at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trickster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trickster)

Quote"Many native traditions held clowns and tricksters as essential to any contact with the sacred. People could not pray until they had laughed, because laughter opens and frees from rigid preconception. Humans had to have tricksters within the most sacred ceremonies for fear that they forget the sacred comes through upset, reversal, surprise. The trickster in most native traditions is essential to creation, to birth".

Check this one out
QuoteFrequently the Trickster figure exhibits gender and form variability, changing gender roles and engaging in same-sex practices. Such figures appear in Native American and First Nations mythologies, where they are said to have a two-spirit nature. Loki, the Norse trickster, also exhibits gender variability, in one case even becoming pregnant; interestingly, he shares the ability to change genders with Odin, the chief Norse deity who also possesses many characteristics of the Trickster. In the case of Loki's pregnancy, he was forced by the Gods to stop a giant from erecting a wall for them before 7 days passed; he solved the problem by transforming into a mare and drawing the giant's magical horse away from its work. He returned some time later with a child he had given birth to--the eight-legged horse Sleipnir, who served as Odin's steed.

This is what separates us from the binaries, babies.   ;)

Yes, but never false, my preciousssss ...  ;D

The Fool is the most powerful card in the tarot deck. It is representative of the Jester or Trickster, the only person in royal court who could make fun of everybody, the king included, with impunity. In that si had a remarkable position from which to point out falsehoods, ignorance and stupidity where nobody else would dare.

So I don't know if that is what you're here to be, but if it is, it's bloody awesome.

A series of fictional book that I've read about Native Americans, the author use a character called a contrary.  The contrary is very similar to the fool. But the describe the contrary as seeing the world differently from everyone else.  I've kinda identified with that definition.

In real life people often refer to me as a fool.   :)  It doesn't bother me.

Hi Jemma,

Is that book 'Little Big Man' by Thomas Berger?

That's one of the key attributes of the Fool. The Fool is an innocent in the same way that children and mad people are, but with the caveat that si does not lose other faculties like intelligence or wisdom. In fact, the Fool is one of the wisest archetypes. A VERY interesting book on the Fool and its attributes is "The Zelator". It's by David Ovason and is a biography about the life of Mark Hedsel, an occultist who lived around the end of the 19th century and through the world wars, and was a contemporary of Austin Osmond Spare. He followed a very rare and unique tradition called The Way of the Fool. It makes for absolutely fascinating reading.

from Wikipedia about Native American Two-Spirit people http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-Spirit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-Spirit)

QuoteThese individuals are often viewed as having two spirits occupying one body. Their dress is usually a mixture of traditionally male and traditionally female articles. They have distinct gender and social roles in their tribes.

Two-spirited individuals perform specific social functions in their communities. In some tribes male-bodied two-spirits held active roles such as:

    * healers or medicine persons
    * gravediggers, undertakers, handling and burying of the deceased
    * conduct mourning and sexual rites
    * conveyers of oral traditions and songs
    * nurses during war expeditions
    * foretold the future
    * conferred lucky names on children or adults
    * wove, made pottery, made beadwork and quillwork
    * arranged marriages
    * made feather regalia for dances
    * special skills in games of chance
    * led scalp-dances
    * fulfilled special functions in connection with the setting up of the central post for the Sun Dance

In some tribes female-bodied two-spirits typically took on roles such as:

    * chief, council
    * trader
    * hunter, trapper, fisher
    * warrior, raider
    * guides
    * peace missions
    * vision quests, prophets
    * medicine persons

Perhaps the power of the trickster is in the unease they create? They can't be the most comfortable peple to be around.
Title: Re: I may have found an anwser - The Trickster
Post by: RebeccaFog on January 04, 2009, 06:12:56 PM
The way I read it, the Trickster isn't necessarily messing with peoples heads. We (speaking for me) find ways to help people connect to their spirituality and ways to help people heal. I basically blocked out any negatives I might have read there.

The trickster can fool others into finding the tools necessary to transcend their general issues and such.

I wouldn't equate the Trickster with The Joker.  The Joker is meant to reflect the utter blackness that an individual can be capable of and also serve as a unique adversary for the Batman.

Didn't you all read the parts about blessing food and war parties?   Blessings.  Not cursings.

yes, but I think there is likely to be a flip side.

I doubt you would be a cut your own smile kind of trickster - more like the Androgynous fool from Robyn Hobbs books - miniputlating the catalyst to create change.

Eitherway, a lot of people are not comfortable around a trickster, takes them out of their comfort zones.

Title: Re: I may have found an anwser - The Trickster

I think the value of the trickster is that si sees the world differently from how other people do, and so reacts differently. The trickster shares that view of the world with others purely by being, and that's why people are uncomfortable, because they don't like their comfortable certainties challenged.

But let's be honest, the trickster can be a force for both creation and destruction, which are really just two sides of the same coin called change. I do think that the Joker could be equated with an aspect of the trickster, it's just that his vision of the world and how he lives that vision is pure destruction - think about some of the more vicious and cruel things Loki did. At the end of the day the Joker's whole plan in the movie was to show that people are animals by making them tear each other apart. And I'm not so sure that he was proven wrong. Individuals proved him wrong, but as a whole he had point.

Either way, whether positive or negative, tricksters are agents of change, agents of chaos. Which is important, because societies that do not change stagnate into dead, uniform entropy and die.

Mina.

Sure, its the way my friend replied to that question once by saying - in his best 'exacerbated dad' voice - "Christ on a crutch, now what's he done?"  Poor girl, I'm sure they had to send her back to the church for a few days to get over that episode.

I didn't mean 'minister' in a derogatory way. I meant 'one who tends to those in need'.

You can minister unto others and have a simple humanitarian cause.

The thing about tricksters being playful and sometimes causing pain to others should be thought of as causing pain to others while attempting to do the right thing. As a trickster, the pain I cause others is unintended.  And that's where wisdom comes into the equation.  The Trickster must gain the wisdom to keep from hurting others through blind action in response to a need. Sometimes the best intentions do not lead to the best results.

To me, causing others pain is always unintended.  The laughter is meant to lighten people's spirits and remind them that sometimes it is safe to just let go of some  of the feelings that become too serious.

I'm tired. I think I ruined my great revelation with stinky writing.   :P

yes, they still perpetrate Tang, in all its horrible fluorescent tooth-melting glory.  Without wishing to ram TEH RELIJINZ down anyone's throat:  there is a sort of consensus amongst Loki-worshippers that Himself likes orange Tang as a libation--that, and anything else where "purple" and "blue" are flavours.

Hello!

I'm new in the board and this is my first message. I have actually read a lot of your posts, but I've had trouble finding something to add, until this one.

So,

re: Fool in the tarot
The fool is the first and the last arcana in the tarot, every journey goes to end right where it starts, so is the cycle of life.
The fool is "born" into his journey and has to pass lots of obstacles, growing and becoming better, etc. He does this until he's reached "the end", and returns to being a fool again, but now because he's different in a totally different way.

re: Blue flavored things
You know? There's a difference between blue-flavored and blue-colored.
I once ate a slice of bread, and it tasted blue, yet it was of color brown. Very weird.

re: Two-spirits
I think there's some cases of insanity where people think they're two "entities" inside them, which (as far as I can tell) are generally male and female.
I don't really believe in spirits, but it's a useful idea, I guess
So anyway, I'm two entities in a male body. I've never found "two-spirited" to be as comfortable as "androgyne" to think about me, so I prefeer the latter.

re: Minions
Stand alone complex is better than minionhood xP

I am trying to write an introduction post, but every time I try to just say something simple to explain what/who I am, I end up with a blog-sized post. And that doesn't seem very useful for a forum.

I always feel guilty when I make a thread go off-topic, but I see that here it's the custom ?
Maybe that's one of the definying characteristics of being a.g. ?

I also found specially interesting, browsing the other threads, that there are lots of INFPs around here, that's very strange for me. Made me think that either the INFP-ness is a product of the a.g.ness or the other way, I mean, INFP are said to be "feel like outsiders".

There are so many things to say !

Title: Re: I may have found an anwser - The Trickster

the trickster is neither "positive" nor "negative".
The trickster is neither "male" nor "female".

As I understand it, that's the whole point of that archetype! It's meant to *trick*. And to trick someone you have to make saidone believe a reality which isn't what thisone is used to.

re: The "joker".
In a way the "trickster" can be anything, but it's not because it "fits every role" but because "no/all roles" is it's role.

The main problem is distinguishing between NULL and *.
Are "All sets of gender" the same as "no sets of gender" ?

If they're different, we end up with:
male <-> female
and
Nullgender <-> pangender

This doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

However, gender as a "social construct" seems to fit that idea, but not so much as a "identity construct", since when one identifies with "neither male nor female" the "social rules for fe/male behaviour" are questioned and sometimes rejected.
I don't see how that depends on "non-gendered" or "all-gendered".

So there's a third gender ?
If that was so, we'd have
male <-v-> female
    androgyne

In which a.g.ness would be merely a "third option".

...

I'm not entirely sure I know what I'm talking about.

male <-> female
and
Nullgender <-> pangender

This doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

Why not? That's exactly how I see it. All you have to do is look at gender in two dimensions rather than just one:

                        totally bigender (100/100)
                                        |
                                        |
                                        |
    (100/0) total man ----- 50/50 ----- total woman (0/100)
                                        |
                                        |
                                        |
                           totally neutrois (0/0)

( witness my ubercool ascii-art skillzzz! ^_^ )

Of course, I don't think the end-points on this little diagram exist - there's no such thing as a perfectly male man or a perfectly female woman, neither is there a total bigender or total neutrois, but there are people that approach either extreme. You'd have another graph representing the physical where this last one represented the mental - i.e. gender identity. somebody totally bigendered would probably show dramatic shifts between male and female, masculine and feminine, while people tending towards the neutrois side of things would be less and less ... attached, for lack of a better word, to a sense of man and woman, till you get an andro who just doesn't find any resonance with either.

Of course, this is just my take on it, and I'm not even an androgyne, so I don't really have a right to comment.

Mina.

I say it doesn't make sense because I can't understand how one would feel "50 non-gendered" ?

I mean, I can imagine someone saying "I have no gender". But saying "I am 25% non-gendered and 75% pan-gendered" sounds weird.

... Ofc, just saying "I am androgyne gendered" sounds pretty weird, too.

Hehe. I understand what you mean - I don't really understand it either, but then, I compare it to cis-gendered males not really being able to understand what I mean when I say I'm a girl. (I'm MtF) I don't see non-gender and pan-gender as in opposition though. Rather I see it as degrees of maleness and femaleness. neutrois has none of either, while pan-gender would have lots of both.

As I said though, just my understanding of it.

Mina.
