Title: Terminology and self image.
Post by: kaitygrl on January 03, 2009, 12:09:18 PM
Hello everyone. I haven't been on this forum for too long and I certainly, do not, know everything there is to know about anything; however, I will speak my mind when I can and where I can.

I have read many posts on this forum and I'm saddened everytime I see people use terms like, "stupid", "idiot", "loser", etc... These words are very detrimental to the self esteem when they are directed towards someone else. The bigger problem here, is that the terms are being used to describe one's self. This is not healthy in any arena, especially an arena of support and care as this forum is. We, in the community, have enough problems with how others view us. We shouldn't add to it with the use of these words as if we're saying them in the mirror.

We have all made mistakes in our lives. Don't be surprised if we all continue making mistakes in the future. Does this mean we're stupid? Not in the least! Mistakes are tools we use to learn. Use them as such and don't degrade yourself in the process. We are all here to help eachother through the trials and tribulations which lie ahead for most, if not, all of us. The use of these terms, hinder the progress and effort we have all given. Keep an open mind and realize mistakes serve their purpose and no one is stupid for making them. Love yourself and accept the fact, you are beautiful/handsome.

I've always seen stupidity as a relative concept.
I'm not stupid, compared to the average person.
However, I am stupid compared to, say, Stephen Hawking.

That's not self degradation; it's a statement of fact.
And I don't feel bad about it.

I'm not sure what my point is.

The human mind does many deceptive things. One is protect the ego. The physical outside world reality is a harsh environment it brings out everyone's weaknesses. But understanding your weaknesses helps you deal with real world problems and allows you to assess probability much more accurate which in turn brings better odds of success. So it comes down to be depressed and successful or a happy fool that does not make things happen.
