Title: Estradiol
Post by: Sheeba on January 20, 2009, 07:08:36 PM
Since I had Srs 10  years ago I've been taking a low dose of Premarin as estrogen therapy prescribed by my doctor. I recently asked my doctor to switch me to something else because of guilty feelings. I know that Premarin is obtained from pregnant mares, and I've read how much they suffer for it.
My doctor prescribed a low dose of Estradiol to replace the Premarin. He's an endocrinologist so he should know what he's doing.

Do you think this sounds about right? The only other estrogen I've ever had besides premarin was injectable estradiol when I first started my transition.

Sheeba I can only comment as far as I can from the point being made about how Premarin is obtained. I made the choice of going for estradial because of it when I started HRT nine months ago and things have been great.

Stardust,
Do you think Estradial is just as effective as Premarin?

In a word Yes.  Estradial is just as effective with less side effects, IE far lower clotting factor for one.  It's available in pill, patch and via injection.  I use a patch (good for 7 days) as it avoids the first pass liver absorpsion via the hapatic artery (IE Pills) and is much easier then injections. Check with your doctor.

Thank you Beni for your input. I'm going to look into patches.

Being post op, there is only a need for a low dose of Estrogen to maintain blood levels at Female menopausal norms.

I have been taking Estradiol Valerate since I was post op (2000) which is in tablet form, but low dosage.

I struggled for months with patches but found I was allergic to the adhesive and could never keep the things on (I play a lot of sport).

Recently I have been looking at Estrogen slow release implants that a GG friend has (she had a ovarian cancer and had them removed), another possible route.

usually false... you need to have high dosages at first, for 5 to 10 years of transition ie.puberty level, than reduce it to normal female level, and then when you reach actual menopausal age, lat's say in you 50s than it is reasonable to switch to "menopausal levels". Lets say a 30 yo woman who recently had SRS, and was on HRT for 2 years before, why on earth would she be put on "menopausal dose" which is in fact so samall that if it doesn't stop her development, it will take ages to reach?
You NEED high doses of oestrdiol for the first 5-10 years of your transition to mimic normal female puberty which itself lasts at least 4 years in young genetic females ie. best case situation is 4 years...

Everyone is different and the affects are different. I am on a very low dose of estadial and wanted it increased because others in my support group said they were on three/four times as much and I should ask for it to be increased.

I went back to my doc and because I am having really good effects they said I didn't need to and there are more risks. I accepted that and I'm glad I did as I have developed more than some others who are on higher.

Sorry Sheeba only just seen your post. No difference between the two and estradial is safer too.

On wearing patches.  I put them on above the belt line and alternate left and right side every other week.  I found that if they were placed low on a glut. then they would sometimes rub off either sticking to undies or pants.  I've not had a problem with them comming off wearing them higher.
