Title: Corius has anyone else being assumed FTM instead of MTF
Post by: mefree on August 13, 2006, 07:24:22 PM
Hello,

I am curious if anyone other than me when informing friends on your sex-gender incongruity if any of them ever assumed that you were transitioning in the opposite direction, for example I am MTF and I have been assumed to be FTM more times than I can count on one hand, LOL, by people who know me.  How often does this happen???

Curious,
Pauline

Just once.  When I was starting with a new therapist, I was just about ready to start fulltime and I walked in while in "male mode" and it wasn't until I had started talking about my past that he realized I was MtF.  He told my this a little later in the session.

Although I am not transgendered, I am a GG, I have been told by a couple of people that if they didn't know me they would think that I am MtF.  I guess I can thank my dad for this.  He is 6'4" (I guess I should say was...he's shrunk in his old age), he has a large frame and big hands.  Needless to say...I took after him as opposed to my 5'5" petite mom.  I'm 5'9" and my hands are really mannish.  My breasts are dinky and my shoulders are broad.  I have never been accused of being petite (except in the breast area).  I was looking at a picture that Marco took of me in San Francisco yesterday and I didn't realize how out of proportion I really am.  Damn...I need a boob job!  Oh well...I can dream.

Ok, perhaps, I forgot to mention that the main reason that I am thought to be FTM is that my birth name is not a "normal" name in the least, let's just say it is often used to describe masculine lesbians and some others, yet it is my birth name.

Which one would you think is the legal name and which one the preferred name out of these options:

Butch or Pauline, which one sounds like a name that a parent would give their child??

I have assumed to be IS like most people here; I even had my chromosomes checked to make sure; well XY, genetic male....now I go back to those times and I wonder.....why on earth did I do that?  to search for answers or to make sure I was female genetically speaking...would that have made a difference?  absolutely NOT!  we are who we are...and sometimes being who we are has no definite answer....

answer to your thread question:  NO!

Oh yeah, more than a few times.

Me:  Well I wanted you to know that I am transsexual...
Them (jumping in):  You used to be a woman then?  A lot of things make sense now...
Me:  Huh?  What?  No, no.. I am going from male TO female.
Them:  Oh.

Not by anyone else that I am aware of. *shrug* I have no social life :P

On more than one occasion I get it wrong though. Heh, commented about that ages ago.

"Sorry what? Yea girl here. Oh transition? Ok, must be going to male then. ... uh, wait a sec!?"

*chortle*
Inside has been a girl for a very long time.

One time I was mistaken for a Dyke. I hope I used the right term. I'm sorry if I didn't. Mannish looking lesbian.
This has only happened one time and that was when I first was coming out.

I think a Dyke is typically a butch man-hating lesbian.  Leigh would know since she's more in touch with the lesbian community. ;)

Well, I guess I'm not a Dyke. I don't hate men, just don't want to be one or have one on my arm or on my back. Besides, I'm married and married women don't look around for something else. We may look at the menu and the menu has increased substancially, but we don't order. I was called a Dyke one time, don't know what it is except I know it has to do with lesbians.

I don't think you're a dyke either.  You come across to me as somebody who has a gentle soul and you definitely don't look "butch".

Love the way you put that.

Yes there are women who hate men but its much more prevelant for men to simply ignored as unimportant in our lives.  In no way am I meaning to offend the guys here but its a fact of life as some of them have mentioned.

Defineing dyke is as difficult as it is who is and who isn't ts.  My version is a woman who does not care if she blends in with the hetero women by means of dress, actions or physical appearence.  One who buys as many or more clothes in the mens section than the womens.  You like it you buy it, very simple.

One night we got into a similar discussion of who is a lesbian and who is a dyke.  T had all of us hold out our hands palm down,  A lesbian had long nails, natural or artificial and were either colored or had clear polish,  Dykes had short nails and nothing on them.  Flannel or button up shirts, loose jeans, Dockers or Sketchers.

Its attitude!  I am who I am, no apologies, no compromises.  If you can't deal with it then its your problem.

To add a sense of humor to this with more than a grain of truth:

# A Lesbian buys real estate. A Dyke rents.
# A Lesbian drinks out of a wine glass. A Dyke pops a top.
# A Dyke owns a Harley. A Lesbian owns a 10 speed Schwinn.
# A Dyke's tattoos don't rub off. A Lesbian's don't show.
# A Lesbian brunches. A Dyke drives-through.
# A Lesbian has acquaintances. A Dyke has buddies.
# A Dyke buys 'Hustler' over the counter. A Lesbian has a subscription.
# None of a Lesbian's earrings are made from parts of her tool box.
# A Lesbian drives a Porsche. A Dyke commands a pick-up.
# A Lesbian has her ears pierced. A Dyke goes further... WAY further!
# A Dyke can actually use the word dildo 15 to 20 times a day.
# A Lesbian passes gas. A Dyke farts.
# A Lesbian cooks. A Dyke defrosts.
# A Lesbian entertains at home. A Dyke has a regular bar stool.
# A Lesbian networks, and chats. A Dyke shows up.
# A Dyke has a tool belt. A Lesbian has a tooled belt.
# A Dyke believes she looks great in a six dollar haircut.
# A Dyke will drink from any hose. A Lesbian carries her own Evian.
# A Lesbian makes dinner. A Dyke makes reservations.
# A Dyke plays softball. A Lesbian plays hardball.

Hmm, my nails aren't painted, but that's mostly because I'm lazy and haven't gotten around to doing it.  It's been 3 weeks since I did my toenails and they are in bad need of a touchup as I wear sandals a lot.  However byt the majority of the definitions, I'm a lot closer to the lesbian side of the scale than the dyke side.

By the way, I loved the comparisons of the 2.
