Title: How did you choose your new name?
Post by: Kirin on February 17, 2009, 05:23:35 PM
How did you choose your gender-appropriate name? And did you have a lot of trouble getting people who have known you before to call you by your chosen name? Did anybody just keep their name because it's appropriate for either gender?

I'm taking my time deciding, myself. It will be awhile before I get to the legal name change bit, so I'm giving it thought. I just wanted to hear some stories from y'all :)

I picked my name when I was 5. It was the prettiest girl's name I had ever heard. It has been with me 54 years now. All three of my given names have a special meaning to me and have no masculine version. (Personally i would NEVER give a girl a feminized version of a man's name - there are fart too many beautiful women's names!)

Most of the people who knew me growing up also knew my feminine name but it didn't matter because I moved away at transition/SRS.

I chose Shane when I was about 15 because it was irish and sounded like a warriors name. My mom chose Travis about 6 months ago, so I got my name legally changed to Travis Shane last week. I still go by my middle name because I've been Shane for 4 years. I could've stayed with my given name Renee, but I have always strongly disliked that name, for anyone lol.

I picked out a few names that I liked. After I came out to my parents, we discussed names. I presented them with my list and let them help me choose my new first and middle names. It was very important to me to include them in the naming process.

Ide always gone as Krissy. Hadnt thought about a formal name as there was so much other stuff going on, but now I have one I like.

Krissandra Gemma McGavin

Krissandra - formilisation of Krissy
Gemma - I girl I know and admire, has the same surname as my middle name
McGavin - My current surname (proud of my heratige)

I met my birth mother when I was 40 (nearly 20 years after transition). I was her first born and she said she was going to name me Shelia. I laughed and told her that I was glad she didn't keep me because I REALLY don't like that name! My oldest sister got stuck with it LOL!

I've answered one of these threads before but it was with a name I didn't keep so...

I was minding a friends dog, the dog was a whiny b!tch named Sally. I was on anti depressants and drinking/cutting a lot at the time so I suggested that name and comparison to my friends as a joke, they loved it  :P

I do like it now though, nothing I could think of was ever comfortable but it turned out to just be a matter of picking one and using it 'til I got used to it. So glad I didn't go with Andrea, my original choice!

I plan to go with Johnnie, because that's what my Mom would have named me had I been born female.. Plus, my name right now is Johnny, and doing only a spelling change fits with how I look at this: That I'm not becoming 100% different person or making a total break with the first 34 years of my life...

Janet is a feminized version of my male.  Which I didn't know at the time I choice it.  I choice it because of my favorite movie, The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Lynn I took from my ex.  Always like it.

QuoteIn Australia they are very fond of feminising male names.  There is: Charlene, Raylene, Waylene, Noelene and others.

Charlene's the only one I've heard get any air-time, apart from on Kath and Kim (the original version, not the new US version), where Kim's daughter's called Epponnee-Raelene Kathleen Darlene Charlene Craig. They may or may not be having a go at current naming trends in Australian suburbia... ;)

While I haven't officially changed my name yet, I just went with a name I'd liked for years. (The name Mum would have given me had I been born a normal boy I didn't really like :P).

My mum was a bit of a nutter (or presentient !) and gave me a non english girl's name at birth. I got teased so bad at school that I took the feminine ending off it as a teenager, at this point I had half my ID with one name and half with the other!

Anyway to cut a long story short the Passport Office ten years ago woke up to the scam that birth certificate name and passport name were not the same and gave me back my old female name whether I liked it or not!

Fate, if such a thing exists, can be very convenient... :)

I'm not sure whether I want to keep my last name or change it as well. Will probably keep it, just because it's easier.

I did not go with what my parents would've picked which would've been Kyle.  However, they didn't even go with what they picked out for a girl (Lauren) because my named ended up being Kelly.

Since my birth name is unisex, I'm moving it to my middle name (which currently isn't unisex).  I would keep it as my first name because it's easy and cheap, but both my parents and me associate it with my femininity, thus, I'm going with Kayden...

which has nothing do with anything in real life.  When I was in 8th grade my best friend and I made "muses".  Kayden was the very first one I made.  He was basically the person I wished I was.  I've always secretly identified with it and when I came out as trans that same friend (who was my roommate at the time) immediately suggested I use that as my name until I could think of something else.  However, I didn't want to, so thus it stays.

And on that note, yes, Kayden is a real name.  Some people think it's completely made up, but no.  It exists.  A more common spelling is Caden, but this way I will still have the same three initials, which makes my university life easier.

Last summer at work my friends told me the name I was going by, Rachel, didn't suit me. So they sat me down to give me a new name. One of them liked puns and she named me Terra for "Terra incognito". I later found out that it is latin for "Into unknown lands". Quite appropriate so i've gone by it since. :)

Like many I went through a couple of different names before I settled in on the one that I have now.

I also agonized over it for a while.  Very few people have the chance to pick a new name for themselves and in many ways it will forever brand that person.  So for me the name had to be *right*.

My other name would only feminize if you spelled it with an *ie* instead of a *y*.  So I rejected that out of hand.  I wanted a name that sounded female as well as spelled fem.

After a lot of searching baby naming sights, I searched my past feelings.  Some of you may remember an actress called Sandy Duncan.  She always struck me as a wonderfully effervescent, funny and upbeat person.  If I wanted to be like someone, that is the person I wanted to be like.  I know the nickname, Sandy, can be male, but mostly it is recognized as female.  And the formal, Sandra, is completely feminine.

Also at the time I didn't run into that many Sandys, since then of course, it seems like just about every other girl I run into is named Sandy.  :-\

Though the etymology of the name is Cassandra, and is linked to people who are woeful and cynical, I choose not to be that way.  You may have heard the term "Don't be such a Cassandra!"  Well, I'm not!

My middle name is my badge of courage.  When I was graduating from grade school, the principal mispronounced my middle name and it came out as Louise.  My *friends* taunted me with that name mercilessly until I cried.  I now carry that name proudly!

Choosing your name can be almost as daunting as the act of coming out.  But if you examine your feelings, I think you'll find the name that is truly yours.

-Sandy

I noticed alot came to their names later in life and only one at a young age , may need a double take to confirm this but any ways , At the same time that I was shown that I was female and not male I also had my name it was just there and so was I just there and the clouds opened and my life has never been the same, as I know you all would say the same...

I was five and I had asked god for the answer to why I had been feeling the things I had been fealing, I had a dream and the answer had come to me from that point on I have had to hide away to the world until I found the net and I could be at ease and show myself to a at most times cold and cruel world.

I was also awair late in life that I could not keep my last name for the hassles that that holds in its self. so when I get to the point that I will need all my legal stuff changed I will change it to my families ancestory name, still who I am but before the family started in this country , I am a third generation Irish(woman) my great grandfather for some odd reason felt it was needed to change it when he came over on the ship from ireland. no biggy easily fixed back. just like transitioning a few steps to become who we are so a few steps to change the legalities...

Many names are unisex or a different gender in a different language. Like Nicola, Andrea and Luca are all men's names in Italian for example.

My own real name is unusual and can pass for virtually anything.

I met a man called Alyssan - thought that was quite a good name, Adam is such a dull name.. if I feminised it, I'd call myself Eve, would cause a really strange pararhyme with my surname though.

I'm looking for a snazzy gnome de plume.

Adama wouldn't be a good choice as it's still a man's name in various places.

How about Eva ;D Or one of my favourites - Amina/Aminata (sort of meaning trustworthy)

When I was 8 years old my aunt started calling me Linus as a nickname. She did it because I was like the Peanuts character: had adult answers to kid questions. 30 years later, I decided to use it as my new name. It is a variation on my birth name and does keep my initials the same so that's good. :)

1. It's meaning: "God is my Judge" seemed appropriate for my situation. I'm agnostic, I don't really believe in a God, but God to me represents fate/existence.

2. Dan Aykroyd:

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi5.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy168%2Fpenguin_furuba%2FPeople%2Fokayyyy.png&hash=17835dbdcf526a367cf2f74e2aa19c5dbdb2825a)

Haha. Yeah, I do what I want. I could have named myself after ANY actor, see, but a lot of people told me, "You do look like a Dan." They disapproved of my other names: Edward (I'd be Ed), Gregory (I'd be Greg), Stephen (I'd be Steve), and a few others. So I chose Daniel (I go by Dan). I was going to go for "Daniel Edward" but Dan Aykroyd's middle name is also Edward, so I chose "Daniel Gregory," which doesn't sound as good as Daniel Edward but I didn't want to steal 2/3 of his name.

It took me a long time to choose my name... I kept hesitating, thinking that everyone would think I transitioned because I'm such a huge Aykroyd fan. But no, that isn't the reason, and it never was. Yes, his character Elwood Blues was the first character I openly "crossdressed" as, but my gender identity did not start there... I know I'll never measure up to Aykroyd's awesomeness level. My gender identity presented at a very young age, but I was very secretive about it. I didn't care about actors or film when I first started calling myself "Jason." I never kept the name Jason because I feel somewhat disconnected from the name.

Post Merge: February 22, 2009, 07:29:43 PM

You know, now that I think about it, I might give up and use Daniel Edward anyway. I don't know. I really freakin' like that name. I could go by Ed if I wanted to. Damn this confusion.

So yeah, my middle name is still up for debate.

hey Dan. I think you should just go with Daniel Edward. Most people won't even know you named yourself for Dan Ackroyd and besides most people don't even know his middle name. Both Dan and Edward are pretty common names. I'm sure there's tons of 'Daniel Edward's around who don't even know they share Dan Ackroyd's first two names.

My first name on here Victoria or Tori, was completely a chosen name... and it was chosen because I thought it was a beautiful name, and I loved it.

But Emily is the name my mom would have given me if I had been born female, so if I transition and get a name change I will respect her in this way at least by getting the proper name.

My friends call me Emma, which I think is cute too and it's related to Emily.

Only one of my friends ever gives me trouble by calling me by the male name and male pronouns. I don't really get it, even the one guy who wasn't so supportive and said it was all weird never messes up. I really wish he would get it already. I get called by the male name and male pronouns by my family all of the time and I'm just sick of it.

My last name is only 1 syllable, so I wanted a first name with some presence to balance it off.  I also wanted to keep my original initials, so I looked through the J's in a baby name book, and the name I liked best was Jamison.

My original middle name was Heather, so I looked through the H's and found "Haddon", which means "hill of heather", and "Hadley" which means "heather meadow".  I'm still debating between the two, but I'm leaning toward Haddon.  (Is that like leaning toward Ferguson's?)

I like names from which you can pick a nickname, and Matthew (Matt) was a name I always liked for whatever reasons. It was the first one I thought of when I came out and everyone told me it fits even though in Germany this name isn't very common.
And since I like double names I chose Ryan as my middle name and everyone around here thinks Matthew-Ryan sounds quite well...there were no other thoughts about it but how it goes with Matthew I guess, I cannot really tell.

For my first name I've chosen Victor. I just liked it, and it's also Orthodox name and I think it would be really important for my family.

For my second name (middle name) I picked James. It's after James Hetfield from Metallica. He's my favourite musician, so when I started thinking about my male name, I knew that James would be my second name...

I always liked the name Leslie, I think I heard my mom say it a few times as a kid as she had a friend with that name. I always planned to use it for a daughter. Oddly I never planned a boys name, and there is a good chance it was what I wanted all along. I have no idea how my mom will feel about it though. I did try other names, but Leslie was what felt right. Though I have had one person say it was strange I picked a name that could go either way, my middle name would remove any doubt. I have no idea what my moms intended name for me was had I been a girl. While that would be kind of nice to use, she picked the first one, I get to pick the second one.  :P Nothing is still set in stone though so we will see but I am pretty set on my chosen name.

I had been contemplating changing my last name to my mothers maiden name for a long time since I am far closer to that side of the family and well, dad was not much of a dad. Now is a good time to change it as I will be changing the rest, plus it adds anonymity. So that was an easy one.

Middle name, I tried to find something that worked with my first and last. In the end, I ended up with a name that works with my heritage. Not a family name, but follows my ancestry lines in terms of where it is from.

All told I like the name I picked, it sounds pretty, and I will never be embarrassed about my middle name since I like it and chose it. There is one bummer though, I can't ever blame my parents if someone dislikes it.

I needed a name for my therapist to use when she called me out of the waiting room,  so it wasn't weird.  And it was the first name I could think of that I liked, that wasn't already taken by one of my friends.  It ended up sticking, so when i changed my name, I just kept it because that's what everyone knew me by by then anyways.

Girlie version of Michael=Michelle.

Then again I may exercise "my woman's Gods given right to change her mind at anytime."

Maybe Mikella.

My great grandmother's name was Helena . She was the sweetest most caring person i have ever met and i was lucky to have her in my life until i was 19yo. So its either Helena or Maria , Maria is the feminine name of my male name.

Luna came from my sister, who noted my unusual obsession with the moon as a kid up until I was about 20. She said that nothing else would ever fit me, so I shouldn't bother looking any longer. Of course I couldn't accept that as true, but she was right. Coincidentally (or maybe not) her obsession with celestial skies earned her the nickname "Star", which so many people call her that it's almost more her name than her real name. She'd change it legally but she's afraid of upsetting our parents.

My new middle name, Simone, is from a song called "Sweet Simone", by Madrugada. I had been searching for a middle name for a long time, and that song came on my playlist and I was thinking "y'know, this actually sounds good with Luna... unlike everything else I've heard." I'm still deliberating on whether or not to change my last name to "Wells", which is an old version my current last name spun off of. It's a bit more common, but I'd have to have my daughter's name changed as well. I'm not positive that's the greatest idea, yet.

I read a novel about Christopher Marlowe, part of the theme of the novel was about the flexibility of words and names and the surnames of non-nobles are pretty flexible. He was also called Marlon, Marley, Merlin...he had a friend who also wrote called Shogspeer.

Anyway, in the book, as in life he was often called kit... I may adopt this as a gnome to plume.

Hi Sarah,

That's true for me too to an extent -- some high school, college, and post-college friends of mine that have been important influences on me were named Alissa, Alana, Melissa, and Alyssum, though I've never met another Alyssa! My grandmother's name is also similar.

I also like my name because it means "rational" (and I just love repeating decimals! :P) -- and because it came into popularity about ten years after I was born (so it won't be too much of an "old lady" name when I'm old! ;D).

~Alyssa

Yeah, Alyssa is a great name... although never a girlfriend, I was infactuated with a Alyssa the whole time I was in school!  And it was while I was school, about ten years ago that crossdressing really became an interest to me... glad to hear I'm not the only one compiling old crushes to identify myself!

Well my mom picked my name Tristan because I was always such a melodramatic child and teen. (Celtic origin: "noise of arms" French origin: "sad" or "sorrowful") so she said it was right up my ally with all the screaming I did about how un fair they treated me and all the crying I did over almost nothing.  She gave me the middle name Sarabi because its Swahili and thinks of me as such a Mirage sometimes

Interesting. You mean only one first name or just one name as with many Javanese (Suharto for example)?

Only one first name.

Like: James Hetfield, for example...
Not: James Alan Hetfield.

OK :)

I've only one first name myself.

From birth I had two, one female and one male... I dumped the male one and really like having just a single first name, saves a lot of time in form filling!

Just good friends. Not that I haven't had my share of crushes -- these just weren't among them. :)

It was very difficult to find a name that had the favorite parts of my original name. But while looking through names I came across Cyrus. It was perfect, especially since it sounded like my screen name Osiris.

Other names didn't really click with me, but that one did and I don't think I'd ever change it. :P

I think for now I'm keeping my name as it is -- it's pretty unique and also androgynous, but I think I'll be going by a more feminine nickname version of it that I used to get called by when I was in boarding school.  I'd be more specific but if I say it I'm just a google search away from people knowing who I am and I'm not quite ready for that :P

When I first started to transition I called myself Tammy Renee.
This is a name I choose because it is close to the name that I
was given at birth, not much thought was given to it.

I was in chat one day and Taylor signed in and told how his
mother had been the one that had renamed him. This profoundly
provoked me to thought, I then was able to somewhat understand how
my mom must be feeling. Here is her eldest child, who she has sweated,
cried and fussed over for many decades, rejecting everything that
she had given "him" over the years, including his name.

When I spoke with my mom the next time, after she corrected
herself for calling me by my former name, I recounted to her Taylor's
story, how it made me think and how I felt. I asked her what
name she would give me. She asked if I was asking what she would
have named me if I have been born a girl, I told her no. What
I was asking was, if she had had another daughter what would she
have named her. My mom told me that she has always loved
the name Heather Rose. So please allow me to introduce myself,
my name is Heather Rose

Always love,
Heather Rose

I was originally named after my grandmother, so it stands to reason to do something in the memory of my elder relatives too. So I'll probably take a first name of my grandfather on my mother's side. (Hans)
Miniar's been my "Online name" for a long time and I think I'll attempt to take it as a middle name too, though in iceland that means requesting permission to name myself Miniar since it's not on the list of "approved names".
As far as last-names go up here, they are "son of" or "daughter of" <name of father>
So I'd go from jónsdóttir to jónsson (lest my dad disowns me, and I doubt that'll happen).

So put that together and you'd get Hans Miniar Jónsson.

Quote from: Sandy on February 19, 2009, 10:26:47 AMthe etymology of the name is Cassandra

I always thought it was Alessandra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandra_(given_name))-- the Italian form of Alexandra.

That was also true for the masculine form of the name in the case of Sandro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandro_Botticelli) Botticelli.

The feminine form of my original name is not obviously connected with the masculine form. It originated in ancient Greek and Latin and developed separately from the masculine version, so in English they turned out pretty different-- my name has its own very girly form which is not just the male name with a girly ending tacked on. It stands on its own. Also, I like the sound of it better than any other name in the world. And it includes my maternal grandmother's name. So it was the perfect choice for me. Sorry, but I don't want to give my real name over the internet.

Well for a while i have toyed with ideas of dan or leo, they were just names that seemed to click in my head. Finally came to the conclusion of Leo short for Leon as its not too far a stretch from my birth name Louise. Though my mind may change lol

First post. Woot. Kinda bumping an old-ish thread though...woops?

Savin, I adore the name Leo, but thats just me. (I preffer the shortened version over Leon anyday, too.)

As for my name, the one I've always wanted for as long as Identified myself as someone who doesn't fit my birthname (which I destest, it's far too feminine for me -Shudder-) is Lafeu (Lah-Few <-- 'Feu' Rhymes with Hugh, another name I actually like, but beside the point.) It's a little usual, but I do love it. As far as I can find, I can't find any existing meaning on it, however it is a Shakepeare name, from 'Alls well that ends well', Lord Lafeu. Hehe. It's also, for those of you who love Disney, the name of the goofy side-kick of Gaston from 'Beauty and the Beast'.

Either way, it's a name thats been around with me for a very long time (by my life length standards anyway) and eventually adapted it for myself. I love the sound of it, it's French by all that I can tell, and my surname, Lyons, can actually be French also, however I don't pronouce it that way, rather just the plain "Lions" way (Rather than "Lee-ons"). It's my family name, I've always loved that part (perhaps because it's more masculine? -Shrugs-) and take pride in that family sense.

As for my middle name, I like that inital, plus, breaks up the already "L.L". My middle name, along with my first I've also always hated with a burning passion. Not that it's the name, it just doesn't suit me. Lovely name and all, really bad choice for me. But then again my parents wouldn't have known when I popped out. LoL oh well. Anyway, another choice from Shakepeare is another name, plain this time, that I've liked; Ross. I like it but not enough to have it as my first name. I always admired the character Ross, when MacBeth was read to me/studied it in school. (I always persisted I read his parts only, I was the one how had to act him out. ;D )

Lafeu Ross Lyons. To me, I like that. It's different, mainly because of Lafeu, but it's me. Been me for a long time. Plus, the Nick-names I get are not bad, they're cute actually. Laf (plain simplied version which I preffered to be called) FeuFeu, (Bunneh FeuFeu, story behind that though lol) Laffy ect.

In my country everyone have only one name, there's no people with two names... But I always wanted to have two names... ;D

I would have picked that name too for the same reason. But unfortunatley "James" is my dad's name and I don't really want to have the same name as him. Unless maybe I changed my last name. Then it would be different. Hmm..since I'm having trouble picking a name this is something to think about

And he's my favorite musician too *hearts*

Heh, I posted this a while ago, figured I'd update.  I was going by Trent for about a year, and then when I actually started on T and my mom realized this was real, she told me that she hated that name and wouldn't call me it.  So I ended up going with Jace because that was my second choice, mom was cool with that one, and I'd be keeping my first initial.  I went with the middle name Hunter because if I had been born a boy, that's what my middle name would have been.

Title: Re: How did you choose your new name?
Post by: Tammy Hope on August 06, 2009, 03:01:08 AM
"Hope" is just an internet thing, a symbolic name. Laura is a leading candidate for a first name but "Lisa" is a very close second.

i considered a lot of little things, when picking among a set of maybe a dozen of my favorite names (like for instance, Tammy is my favorite but I have a close cousin who's nickname is Tammy and I don't want any off-base assumptions made) including how easy it is to say, remember, and write in a signature.

Also, I know that the middle name will be "Elizabeth" just because you can do so many things with that name (and because "Beth" is on the short list of names to "go by")

Mainly though, i just went with what "felt right"  to shorten the list.

Right now I'm going by female name shortened to male version. I needed legal name on my enrollment for study place for student grant reasons. There was a space on the form for "prefered name" for shortening names, but I didn't feel like explaining how Dante was short for <6 letter female name starts with K does not end in Y or I>.

I'm doing a legal name change at the end of the year to the name I actually want (First and Last, dropping middle and going without), so it's all good.

I heard it more than 10 years ago (first and last). Instantly, I thought it was awesome and I had to have it for myself. Issue was, I wasn't out - so I just used the name when asked online for a "full name", and to myself. I was upset for a long time that I couldn't use it offline due to the "stupid gender thing" getting in the way (again!). Fixed that now though, heh heh :).

So yeah, deciding wasn't as hard for me as it was for some. Initially there was a magic 8 ball involved, but it became redundant early on  ;D.
