Title: Sleeping pattern binary - early bird or night owl?
Post by: Lutin on February 26, 2009, 08:24:16 AM
I'm once again wide awake at 1 am (can't remember the last time I was asleep before 2), and was wondering if there is any particularly noticeable trend in the trans community for diurnality or nocturnality, or, indeed, if anyone is crepuscular (most active during twilight).

This is mainly just the curiosity of a bored nocturnal mind, though it would be interesting to see if there actually is a trend of some sort amongst ourselves here.

Hoot hoot,

Will

Naturally nocturnal. Always have been due to photosensitivity and dislike of sunlight. Although, since I have to work during the day... that often means I get very little sleep.

I prefer the night but that's partially because no matter what time it is when I wake up, it's always like waking up from a 2 hour sleep... again and again and again...
So I hate mornings.. I crawl out of bed like some grumpy old monstrosity, and then two hours (and copious amounts of coffee) later, I can start looking something like a Human Being.. :P

I'm an early bird. I usually get up at 6 AM. My mind is buzzing and all my good ideas come at this time.
By nighttime, my brain has slowed down. A bit of reading in bed, then sleep.

IDK that's a tough one for me. I'm definitely a morning person, mostly, but I'm also a night person ... which leaves the rest of the day with me doing a very good zombie impersonation - midmorning to late afternoon is horrible, and I'd love nothing so much as to be sleeping then.

I heard about this guy who split his day up by sleeping 4 hours, doing 8 hours, then another 4 hours - he worked as a freelance programmer, so he could, and he says it was the best change he ever made in his life. I'd love to try that.

Mina.

Definitely both. I'm an insomniac AND I start work early. I have years of sleep to catch up on, and even with all the waking hours I still never get everything done.

:o I tend to be a bit of both, I have to because I drive over the road so the days and nights turn to one... I have done this for twelve years so my internal clock is really srewed up, I think that the gender issues dont come into play in the matter but the depression does have a bit to do with it, at least that is what my old doctor said then he prescribed prozac ( always some pill for some thing) I dont like taking pills unless I have to I try to keep my system as clean as I can ( other than my bad habbit of smoking) I know I will have to quit at some point but it helps in some way to make it through the day. sorry back to topic...

we tend to over analize things now dont we ( humans in general ) we think that because we do certain things that means one thing I try not to over analize things for this fact I try to keep it simple what it is is what it is ..... I cant sleep then that means I cant sleep its just the way it is ..... Right or wrong thats how I see it.. :icon_confused2:

The nature of running a business, tending to clients and being a night owl leaves me in the predicament of getting only a few hours of sleep a night. I am usually up till at least 1-2am, and typically wake up between 5-6am. Really sucks. When I dont have to be onsite at clients, my natural rhythm is to sleep from 3-10am. Weekends I may not crawl into bed until sunrise, and will sleep till the crack of noon!  :icon_evil_laugh:

My ex-wife was an early bird, up at 5 in bed before 10. I would wake up at the crack of 10, and be up until 2-3am. She used to fret about it, but it never bothered me. Back then (early 90s) they would run late night marathon ST:TNG episodes, so from my perspective a perfect evening was dinner, sex and startrek.  :D

My sleep cycle must be centered around something other than earth, with a day longer than earth's by an average of 30 minutes.....

You see, my clock keeps shifting, I can force it but then accumulate sleep deprivation and be tired all the time (until ~60 days later when my clock completes a forward 24h circle around itself and I can have decent sleep during a few consecutive days) or just go with it and be totally unable to maintain any single specific schedule for more than 2 or 3 weeks.  :-\

Thank goodness for that 'Other' choice right?

I'm both or neither, I think. My sleep patterns have been all over the place ever since I was a teenager. Sometimes I'm still awake at 6am, sometimes I'm waking up at that time. I tend to naturally gravitate towards being a night owl, but I think that's because I often get distracted by things and end up going to bed way too late. But perhaps I'm an early bird at heart, because I feel most happiest/healthiest when I'm waking up around 5am and going to sleep around 10pm. My favourite time of the day is between 3am-5am because it's so peaceful. I found the term 'matutinal' which means "an organism that is only or primarily active in the pre-dawn hours or early morning". Sounds good. :P

Night owl, for sure. On an average night I fall asleep between 2:30 AM and 4:00 AM and do not wake up until between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
Granted, upon waking up I am immediately hyperactive and cheerful.

total night owl here too, probably got it from my dad, mt older brother is like this too. i never wondered if it was a trans thing...but anyone can tell I'm up all night here, all my posts are from 9pm to 4am. i think almost every time i don't get here til 11 or midnight though. it's to bed 3 or 4 am than if i had it my way wouldn't get up til 3 or 4pm but there's this job thing in the afternoons so that results in 3 or 4 hours of sleep in the mornings sometimes on work days. even if i know i have to get up at 8 or 9am I'm still wide awake at 3 am ugh.

Carpe Noctem!

It drove my mom crazy growing up, but I have alway been a night person.  I sleep better during the day and am most productive between 3 and 5am.  Based on a lot of reading, I have informally self-diagnosed myself with Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome.   It all fits.   Though lately since I've started HRT I have found my circadian rhythms shifting... :o, so <shrugs>   ???

Both, generally.
I tend to get outside at around 5:20, or whenever the sun comes out so I can exercise a bit.
But I sleep usually during the afternoon, wake up late at night, and then stay up until the next afternoon.

I'm currently trying to fix this... XD

it totally depends, usually on the weather. if it's sunny i get so tired i just wanna sleep the whole day away and not get up until the sun goes down. that glowing thing on the sky gives me headaches, burns my eyes, makes me all the more sure that i must have vampire blood in me. even my skin reacts to its rays

but if it's cloudy or mid winter, i'll get up early in the morning in a very good mood

Being nocturnal simply didn't work for me, I guess.  I'm jealous of all you night owls who make it work.   ::)

After converting to a crepuscular schedule, my depression eased its grip on me a bit.  I need vitamin D from sunlight (in small doses because I burn extra-crispy), I get severely depressed when I don't have enough 'dawn' hours and too many 'dusk' hours.  Which sums up how this week has been.  *sigh*

I was a night owl in college, usually from procrastination.  I'd stay up until 5-6 am doing labs on a weekly basis, sleeping around 3 am otherwise.

Now that I have a steady job I'm forced into an in-between or early bird.  I go to sleep between 11-12 then wake up around 7.  On the weekends I push that back up to an hour or two.

I'm also a night owl forced by the need for a paycheck to be a semi- early bird.  It used to be almost impossible to fall asleep before 3am and I was often up till 4 or 5am, but it worked ok because i worked a 2-10pm shift at the time.  Now I have a "real office job"  working 10am-6:30 with a 40 minute morning commute, so Ive gotten used to getting up around 8:30 (ok, so its normally closer to 9 and I run around frantically in the morning and barely make it to work on time everyday).   Now I normally go to bed around 12-1 am, and find myslef unable to stay in bed past 10, when a couple years ago I could easily sleep till 2 in the afternoon.  I dont know if its a force of habit from my work schedule, or if I've just calmed down from getting older and partying and getting wasted less.

I'm neither, all things considered.  I'm one of those people who would do far better with a 28 to 30 hour clock.

There are some mornings where I am up well before a 5AM alarm goes off and there are other nights where I may get to 3-4AM before realizing 'oh hell, I need to get some sleep.'  That being said, I also tend to have problems adjusting to other time zones precisely because of the habits that come with too many years of having to be into an office around 8:30AM...when I was in Californina last week, I was rolling over and was wide awake before 5AM their time simply because if I was not awake by 7AM CST, I was WAY late for the day...

I think some of this is also why I can run marathon poker sessions (not Phil Laak marathon, but certainly some 24-30 hour blocks when I was running good)...

My natural cycle has me asleep in the late morning, with at most a nap in the evening-early night.

As Hadrian says: "there simply isn't enough time in a day"... it's such a pain to keep up with those who are awake when I'd like to be asleep :P

night hawk. I get a lot of thinking, writing, and drawing done at night. My creativity just plummets during the day. I do try to get to bed before midnight when I work any earlier than 2pm the next day though. Otherwise I just won't wake up.

While I was unemployed I would stay up until 7 or 8 in the morning, after taking walks through the park when the birds start chirping around 4am. It kept me relatively sane :P
